There are a lot of gamers in my school, so it gives us something to talk about.

Well when all you do is play games then all you will have to talk about is games which would hurt your social skills. However if, like me, gaming is just s small part of your life in the big picture then it can be helpfull. You get to use some nerd humour and other stuff.

Of course, every time I talk to someone I see a dial of options to choose from!

All kidding aside, I have no idea.

They improve social skills with other gamers, seeing as you've got something to talk about. That's really all they do.

Pfft, I had no social skills to begin with, so I won't blame anything on videogames.
However Rock Band encouraged me to learn guitar, and now I'm pretty good, so I got a cool "rock-star" rep, which has helped my sociability a little.

No, it has nothing to do with your social skills. It's just a coincidence that people with poor social abilities tend to gravitate towards video game culture.

I did just fine before I played games, and I do just fine now that I do play.

I ,in my opinion, be it false or true, have always found myself having pretty good social skills, compared to some of my friends, and since a few of my friends play games too, I have a lot to talk about with them, so it doesn't effect social skills if they were pretty good in the first place, and it adds discussion topics.

Games don't affect my social skills at all. I'm a little anti-social to begin with, video games just enable that behavior better than any other hobby I've had. :)

Games have simply changed some of the topics I have available to talk about. Other than my gaming friends games don't factor in. I tend to be anti-social unless I am put in public then I can turn on the social side of me. It is always a choice I am who I need to be.

Yes, they have a negative effect. If only because instead of doing something social, your inside playing videogames. The exception of course is playing games with people you know. Note, random strangers do not count because they are talking heads and not people.

Brought me closer to my friends and have improved my abilities.

But I think lone wolfing for continuous periods or just being a douche online in early life might not be so good.

I've always been a very social person, no idea if I'd be less sociable without videogames or not, so I donno if they're behind my good social skills. Either way, I have loads of friends and I love games. Correlation? Who knows
