Similar to comparing Braveheart to a slasher film [ex: Texas Chainsaw], it depends on the genre, if the character's built up, and of course whether or not it makes sense.

when the quest is completed they can just die.

i don't mind. who wants a happily ever after?
i usually don't like the characters enough to have them live.

i loved drakengard in this way.
and it's many many endings.

this is a case of a character i really liked because he was such a dick!
and yet a good person kinda. (no you have no idea what i'm talking about till you play the game)

If it fits the ending and story. When it's just for shock, or because they don't know how to end things, then I dislike it.

As long as it fits the plot I don't really care, you've finished the game so it's just a good way of ending it for people.

I did not feel cheated when this happend...

I didn't feel cheated in the force unleashed 'cause you knew he was going to die Episodes 4-6 would not be the same!

As long as it fits the story, is handled well ánd the character is relatable, i believe it will be a very satisfying end to the story.

The ending sequence to Lufia II remains my all-time favourite example of this. Even though it's in a spoiler box, most likely anyone reading this will not have seen it. It really needs to be experienced to explain.
That was indeed a good ending: The sacrifice made sense and it had nice music to boot.
Sadly, the remake/reimagining features an alternative ending where both survive.
Thanks for the warning. I had misgivings when they revealed it was more like an Action-adventure, but now I'm sure I'm not getting it.

I want to slap the creators, if I'm honest.
It's nice when you can just have your cake and eat it, The Godfather 2 style.

As most have said, if it fits the storyline, then I'm cool with it. But I dislike it otherwise.

MASS EFFECT SPOILER:
And there are some game stories that could have been made better with it. Like the end of Mass Effect. Would have been so much more emotional if Shepard had died.

Most of the time i just dont care, there is normaly a reason why they died. Kinda puts a spanner in the works for a sequal though.

I think I hate it more when an NPC the game has gone to a lot of effort to encourage your emotional attachment to dies, for no apparently fair reason.

Fable 2, I'm looking at you. Save the world or your dog? Really? *Really?*

If it fits. Killing your main character needs to be epic and extravagant, even more so then killing off any other character. It should be the big epic finale.

I love a good emotional parting from the main player character. As long as it makes sense, of course. It's like when I was reading "The Great Gatsby" in english class. I though it was good, but a bunch if my classmates hated it because
Gatsby dies at the end.

That's crap. Just because the main character died didn't mean that his actions weren't important.

It depends, if they do it to wedge a bit of emo Jesus symbolism in, maybe. Depends.
Messiah *bang*
Someone's gonna figure that out quick enough to yell out spoiler.

If they do it well, and it's impactful, then definitly yes.

I'm surprised that so many people are as relaxed as me about it. I thought that "feeling cheated" would be the favourite, rather than "fine with it".

I'm fine if it fits in the story.
COD4 was great, well you died in the middle but you get my point.
COD6/Fallout 3 not so much.

You know, I'm kind of surprised that the apathetic answer won this time. I for one, actually like death in stories. Having a character meet their end isn't sad, its fitting. Plus, this gives the story meaning. All you have of them is the temporary amount of time you see. It's more enjoyable if you know there's an ending.
