What is clearing the cache?

Why does it delete updates and is this not a bad thing?

Will it erase my save files?

Will it make my games run smoother?

It's used to clear any bad files and such of your hard drive, it's usually advised to resolve technical issues. It will not delete save files, only formatting can do that at. From my experience I've seen no true differences, positive or negitive. Hope that helped

Why would deleting updates be a bad thing? It may be a pain in the ass especially to your friends who are online when you go through your library to re-update them but other than that. I have never found any real difference when I have done it regarding game performance. It is just useful when you are trying to glitch an achievement.

But surely updates are there to fix games, therefore deleting them will return them to thier original broken state?? I.e. Fallout 3

As long as you are connected to live the game will just redownload the update. If you don't reconnect to live to get the update some games might have a problem with any DLC you have that was made for the updated version, or savegames might need the update.

It doesn't erase your saves or DLC, just cache and updates. So as long as you have a connection to xbox live gold/silver nothing bad can happen. Your games will give that update is available thing just like any other update

Cool. So what does it do? Get rid of corruptions?

the 360 reserves space on the harddrive for games to store temporary data in order to speed up loading times and other things, sometimes the data can get corrupted (do to bad game programming) resulting in a game locking up or doing other strange things. It's kinda like a web browsers cache/cookies sometimes have to clean them out if you have problems with a website

I only ever cleared my cache since the Mercenaries 2 achievement Stand up and Shout would not unlock despite having the requirements met. Clearing cache and running without updating solved this problem though.

Although I haven't noticed any improvement in speed or any real benefits besides corruption clearing - which doesn't seem to be too common either

No doubt although even with Fallout 3 they fixed an easy xp glitch as well as a speech glitch (for silver tongue devil achievement) so if you wanted to use either of them you would neeed to clear the cache.
