Questions about Steam

I was searching for a way to buy Kings Quest VI online (nastalgia ok, leave me alone!) and saw an article that said steam has all of them for like 20 bucks

I don't really know anything about steam, I know its by valve, but is it a program you have to download? can I browse it for free? I've never really been into digital distrobution so I've kinda ignored it. This last thing I really remember about steam was you needed it to play HL2 and needed an internent connection everytime you wanted to play it.

Steam now is a place where you can download a wide variety of games and demos, and usually they have some good deals. You can play the games offline if you have them fully updated.

Thanks all, all the info and the FAQS of steam helped. Just making sure, there's alot of knowledge on these forums about errors, bugs and other stuff that I wanted to make sure steam got everyone's thumbs up here before I blew any money
