Right from th start of my life have I been a console only player. Sure I played a couple RTSs back in the day when I was like, 8, but now I have moved on to my my xbox. In other words, I don' have a DAMN clue about systeme requirements, Steam, or anything of the sort. However, Team Fortress 2 recently caught my eye, and I realise, that if I am ever going to get into PC gaming, now would be the time.

First off, yes, I have googled these questions, but I haven't gotten any REAL answers. I do know it is on the console too with the Orange Box, but I don't think I get any of the updates.

So. I have a PC with Vista installed on it, and I don't have anything but Word installed on it, so it should have plenty of space. So will having just an average PC keep me from buying this game? First I download steam, then TF2 for 20$. Do I have to upgrade?

Besides that, what is TF2 really like? Do you unlock stuff? Are there lots of people playing it?

Anything would be helpfull, and it would be great if you could direct me to a site with my answers too.

Can't tell you if your computer will run it without knowing what your computer is made of.
Post your system specs.

Yes you unlock stuff, but also get given things randomly. There are loads of people playing it constantly.

For PC there is a lot of people. For consoles its nothing but 35 people all in games that force you to be an engineer.

TF2 is a good shooter but what i love is that it has a sense of humor around it.

There's about 20,000 players right now. As for if you can run it, this [http://www.systemrequirementslab.com/cyri] works really well.

You can get Team Fortress 2 to run on pretty much anything as long as it has some sort of graphics capability. Check here if you want, but you can get it to run on machines even LESS powerful than the system specs.

There are LOADS of people (20,000 players? I dunno, it sure is a lot!) playing it all the time. My Brother just clocked 1,200 Hours.

You unlock stuff, but there are also random item drops. you'll understand it if you get the game, it's really easy to play even without the unlocks.

TF2 is your basic shooter if your basic shooter had good balance, charm, team work, and hats. You will randomly find weapons when you either die or a round ends, most of the time though you won't find anything. Unlocking certain achievements will also give you weapons. These weapons can be crafted to make hats to add individuallity, but crafting weapons will take them out of your backpack thus you equip them or craft them again.

You'll have to wait for someone with tech knowledge to answer your other questions.

M'kay, first off, yes, lots of people play it, you'll easily find a set of games and start getting a few favourite servers under your belt. I don't know quite how multiplayer works on consoles, but the impression everyone has given me is that it's all done peer to peer. Things are different here, you get told a list of games that you can join and you pick the one that looks nicest. Steam handles all that for you, as well as handling the launching of the game and providing an IM client and a web browser while you play.

If you want to know your system specs, right click on "my computer" and hit properties. You should be told your processor speed and RAM capacity. Your graphics card is listed under the "display drivers" section of the device manager. I'm not sure what you mean by "average", so check the graphics card. The simplest comparison of graphics cards I have found so far is, strangely enough, this one [http://services.runescape.com/m=forum/forums.ws?25,26,645,60087869]. I've managed to run TF2 on an ATI Radeon X600, with reasonable specs, so you should be fine with anything better than that.

As for TF2 itself, there are 9 distinct classes, each one designed for a particular purpose and with all their stats fine tuned to fit. These aren't like the classes in MW2, and you can't adjust every single detail of them, but you won't want to. If you want a more in depth guide to them all, this article [http://wiki.teamfortress.com/wiki/Classes] should sort you out.

Each class also has a set of alternative weapons, which you won't have access to at first but will start finding soon enough. The alternative weapons keep the class playing in much the same way, but tweak them slightly to fit different scenarios. The Heavy Weapons Guy, for example, has a choice of 2 miniguns; Sasha causes more damage, Natascha slows enemies down slightly each time you hit. If you're getting a load of light, fast classes flung at you like Scouts and Pyros, then Natascha is a more favourable choice.

Each class also has access to a set of hats, which serve no purpose whatsoever other than looking damn cool and proving that you're more awesome than the guy you've just killed. Hats and weapons are dropped randomly, and when you die you may receive a message saying that you've just found something, which will allow you to use it from then on. You can also unlock most weapons by completing a set of achievements. All the weapons are listed here [http://wiki.teamfortress.com/wiki/Weapons], and the hats can be found here [http://wiki.teamfortress.com/wiki/Hats].

I'd recommend looking up the "Meet the team" [http://www.teamfortress.com/movies.htm] videos as well, if you haven't already. They'll give you a nice flavour of the game, as well as being damned hilarious. Check some gameplay videos, as well. I'm particularly fond of DispleasedEskimo's [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ztdDLR3Fx24], although he spends most of his time dicking around.

So, yeah, in that wall of text you should find all the information you need, give me a shout if you want to know anything more.

I would recommend that you watch some gameplay videos on youtube, to see what the game is like. The game is composed of nine unique and balanced classes.

Rundown of the classes:
Scout: Very fast, can double jump, armed with a very powerful shotgun.
Soldier: Somewhat slow, but armed with highish health and a rocket launcher.
Pyro: Moderately fast, armed with a flamethrower and highly resistant to fire damage.
Demoman: Reasonably fast, armed with a grenade launcher and remote detonated stickybombs.
Engineer: Can build teleporters, dispensers (which heal and refill ammo) and a sentry gun.
Heavy: Big, slow and hard to kill, armed with a massive mini-gun.
Medic: Somewhat fast and armed with a medigun, which can heal people and render you and them invulnerable for a short time.
Sniper: Like the name says, armed with a sniper rifle and an SMG, deadly at long ranges.
Spy: Can disguise themselves as one of the enemy, put a sapper on engineer buildings (which drains their health, renders them useless and eventually destroys them) and can backstab for an insta-kill. However, they are very easy to kill.

And unlockable weapons are given to you if you get a certain amount of achievements, or are given out at random time periods.
Also, with the unlocks, one item can turn the class into something completely different.

For example, the sniper can trade up his sniper for a bow and arrow, making him have to get closer to the action.

Also he can throw piss at people. Just saying.

TF2 is one of my favorite games ever. Definitely worth the dough.

Ok: It's cool, the characters look like they stepped out of a very violent pixar movie, the maps are fun and the continual updates are nice. Plus the tf2 community is the only community i've ever seen that has ever gotten so enraged over hats, granted the hats are awesome.

You can unlock the non-vanilla weapons by earning enough acheivments to get milestones (each milestone won't count towards the next) or by getting random drops which work like this: there's a certain amount of time each week in which you can get random drops, at random intervals of that time the game will roll to see if you get a new item, weapons are most common while hats are very very very rare. As for you last question yes, there are a staggering amount of people playing it as you can see from the server lists, I recomend ou check out some of the vanila maps first before joining any of the player made maps (of which there are 74582474589426549734094872838724847328328473847.9 at last count) fyi you can download in game (sweet!) plus scroll to the bottom of your server list (be sure to click the simplified list box first) and when you se maps labeled zf_somethingorother that's a mod called zombie fortress, it's fun. Plus look in the p section for maps named ph_whatever and that's prophunt. Honestly just remember m1 to fire m2 to altfire and wasd to move and you should get to grips with it in no time.

ny particular information or trivia you need just see the official wiki http://tf2wiki.net/wiki/Main_Page. also for unbridled hilarity i'd check out the domination lines on youtube ala these: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IX__swbUwag

hundreds of thousands of people are playing that game..
Myself i have played it 900+ hours and it is still the best game ever..

If you run on low or moderat settings you dont really need a very good pc to run it..

Per value and play time, updates and everything, this is the best value game in history..

Everything bout the game can be found at TF2 Wiki..

Just type "TF2 wiki" in your address bar.. The page will come by itself..

Very good page..

The drop system works by a system in the game rolling a virtual Nth-sided die every time you die or kill another player. (This applies to any kind of death in the game- burning, headshot, bleeding, falling damage, suicide, environmental death, exploding, drowning, friendly fire, etc.) The roll will first decide if the kill or death "Drops" an item. If an item is dropped, then it is rolled what the item will be. There are Primary Weapons, Secondary Weapons, Melee weapons, PDA slots, Miscellaneous slots and Hats. Hats have a lower chance of dropping, and it is possible to get more than one of the same item.
Items appear in the Backpack menu, which can be accessed by pressing M (default). The Backpack shows all the items you have, to a grand total of 100. (You are not allowed to have more than 100.) From the backpack you can go to the Class Loadout menu, where you can change the weapons your classes have (For example, Changing your Scout instead of having a Scattergun, to have a Force-a-Nature, or Demoman's Stickybomb Launcher to the Chargin' Targe.)
If you have items you don't need or want, you can use an option called Crafting to reamalgamate items into ones you do want, although it's expensive. A comprehensive rundown on Crafting can be found here [http://wiki.teamfortress.com/wiki/Crafting].
