I don't know about Beamdog and expecting anything worthwhile to come from them, or trusting them with a new d&d game. Especially from what I'm hearing/seeing about this upcoming 'enhanced' edition. I'd rather Obsidian get hold of the license myself.(especially now that Tim Cain is there)

But you still have the problem of WotC not wanting to let them use older editions for a NEW game.
I don't know what you've been hearing, but everything I've seen and heard(and I've been following the forums as well as Trent Oster's tweets) has been encouraging.

As far as new games, well I wouldn't worry too much about that. The new edition in the works seems to be shaping up to be something that a fan of 2nd Edition should be fairly comfortable with. WotC seems to have gone back to basics, and is building up from there instead of evolving the game further along 4E's departure.

THAC0 is quite neat to, I actualy prefer it to the way current D&D editions do it.
The current system is much more intuitive, The problem with THAC0 is that you are rolling against a property of your character modified by a property of the target.

With the current system of rolling against the targets AC it's properties of your character that modify your roll and properties of the target that modify the target value. That seperation of "My stats modify me, your stats modify you" is much more sensible and can much more easily be universally applied.
I still prefer THAC0 to current systems. Can I? Thank you.
No ;)

The answer to every melee question in the game is Katana +5
Actually, no it isn't. Reason being that there are no +5 katanas in Baldur's Gate, they only go up to +4, and that only with Cespenar's help.

(and that might not sound like too big a deal, until you try and hurt Kangaxx...)

Another thing Baldur's Gate does that's, to put it mildly, not exactly intuitive is have a very old armour class system. The lower it is the better. I know it's obvious when you're playing the game but every so often I look at my tank and think "Why the hell is your AC -3 when I've been getting you the best stuff I can find?".

Yup, Baldur's Gate is seriously hard if you're not careful. And if you like NPCs like Viconia or Xan in your party (CON under 10, semi-melee; why do I always do this to myself?). The amount of quicksaving I have done...
Anyway if your party is dieing way too much, you can always try lowering the difficulty a bit. It's nothing to be ashamed of ;)

They just don't make PC top-down games like this anymore...engaging story, great NPCs, and actual difficulty that's satisfying to overcome. Marvelous stuff.
