No, no, no - read the OP, I didn't feel like I was smarter, I done ok at school ( Which I finished years ago ) I was quite friendly, always helped people and just stayed out of the way.

I assume it was just my area, it is known for it's silly amount of idiots.

Okay, here's SillyBear's list of reasons why people may bully smart individuals:

1 - Jealousy. "I wish I had what he has, I hate him, let's belittle him"

2 - Elitism. Many "smart people" I know do almost naturally sound smug and superior without even noticing. Many people don't like it, and they can get the sense that the smart person thinks they're better than them - and quite often smart people do think they are intrinsically better than someone who isn't quite as good as maths or science. It's rude and they may be targeted for it.

3 - Difference. "He spends in lunch times in the library and reads stupid books. What an idiot".

I'd say most attacks are due to simple difference. Take a look at these forums, it's filled with "___ is a fucking idiot because they do not act like me!/believe like me!/Think like me!"

Couldn't tell you. In my class the smart kids were also the strongest (for the most part). Nobody messed with us.

Quite simply, children are monsters.

Most children have a deeply competitive instinct, and the battle for alpha dog starts at a very early age.

"Smart" kids have already tipped their hands, so other kids have to beat them down so they have a chance at becoming alpha.

If "Strong" kids didn't attack "Smart" kids, then we'd have the same situation reversed, where the "Smart" would be laughing cruelly at the "Strong".

A-HA! You are as PRESUMPTUOUS as your are POOR and IRISH. Tarnish notte the MAJESTY of my TOWER of HATS!

No but seriously, bullies are terrified of intelligence. I think.

I remember I was a bit of a douchebag in school but I never really bullied anyone, Since i got into chess I remember getting a bit of heat from my friends for hanging with the "neeks" (it's east london word for geek lol) XD i told them to fuck themselves and I enjoy hanging with the neeks .. after a few laughs and play fights it was all forgotten.

Back then no one really used to bully anyone for how smart they were ... mostly just because of how they dressed LOL and even though everyone HUNG OUT in different groups when it came time to play football during lunch everyone who's interested in football (being east london that was almost the whole school) played and if the geek could play BELIEVE he got picked early if not first.

LOOOOOL YOU REMINDED ME OF JAMES!!!!!! dude, the geekiest skinniest white kid you've ever seen (in a mostly black school too LOL) quite kid, but he played footy like a fucking demon! some days it would crack me up because you see 2 huge black dudes fighting over this skinny white boy because both want him on their team. like **First pick** "yo blad i pick martin" "BRUV!!! I WANTED MARTIN!! ALLOW IT!!"

we used to joke about how this kid had hardcore immunity from getting bullied because of his godly skills with the ball haha no one wanted to risk martin not playing for them ROTFLMFAO

Because kids are assholes. The high school I went to, even the elementary school, was a terrible place for most kids at one time or another (including me, I was a bit of a history nerd and so got some shit for that, probably came of as smug sometimes).

I remember that I was bullied up until my Senior year. I am fairly smart, enough to pick up on things faster than some of others at my old school. It seems that being different just makes you a natural target. Luckily, I had enlisted in the Army prior to my senior year, allowing me to go through Basic Training during the summer. The "bullies" got one hell of a wake up call come the new year.

I never experianced any form of bullying in school. However this may have something to do with the fact that I attended private schools where there were serious repercussions for bullying and that I played rugby so I was always one of the bigger kids.

easy. at least in the US to understand. In the US, intelligence is evil. look at the people we call heroes. Basketball, Football, Soccer, Baseball players. People whose entire goal is to hit/catch/whatever with a ball. pretty simple. Look at people we call villains. Bill Gates, Sam Harris, Christopher Hitchens, Richard Dawkins, Carl Sagan, Stem cell researchers, the list goes on. People who are EDUCATED are bad. So, at least in the US, of course they will bully smart people. They are evil.

This thread is amusing. It has nothing to do with intelligence (get over yourself) like so many others have already pointed out, but how you are socially.

I was forced to move to a new state during the middle of my 11th year of high school. I was of course nervous being placed in an entirely new culture (the deep south, shudder) and trying to somewhat meet new people so it wouldn't entirely be a miserable experience until I graduated.

I did pretty well in high school (4.0 GPA) and ranked higher than the school's Valedictorian (I wasn't it because I transferred in). My new classmates saw this rather quickly, but because I'm easy to talk to know how to make other people laugh, we all got along just fine and pretty soon I was respected by all the social cliques and silly groups people get in.

Oddly enough I was more popular at this new school rather than my old one. Funny how that works.

As one of the self-appointed "smart" kids you may deserve to be bullied. Arrogance is an ugly thing.

Call my school situation weird but if anyone was to be the bully, it would be me. I was the strongest out of everyone in my grade from elementary school until high school graduation. And personally, I loved the nerds and even considered myself one to some degree (although admittedly, not as smart as some). If anyone decided to give them guff, they would have to go through me.

No one did, and there was a sort of respect for the nerds from the more popular kids. No teasing, no exploiting, just some weird sort of harmony. That isn't to say it was perfect, but I never felt as if there was any open segregation. The nerds were free to embrace their true nature and I'm happy to have had a part in that.

I'm going to call bullshit here. Although there are some small cultural groups in the US that don't value higher education being clever and well educated has always been promoted by the greater majority in the US. I have always been encouraged to go to college and make good grades and told that if i didn't my life would suck. I think your simply promoting the currently trendy anti-American stereotypes, but then I guess it's anything to fit in or be hip right?

You dot really have to be smart, just weak enough looking.

I was smart. I made a business out of it, charging people to do Homework for them, and did a lending business (of sorts). But I was small, and i didnt do a lot of "jock" stuff, so I looked weak. BUt it only took one bully to try before I beat him down to show I wasnt taking shit.

But then again, I had freinds too, of every level of intelligence. if you didnt have friends, you were as good as dead (occasionally in a literal sense).

I'm gonna call bullshit on your "I'm being hip" idea. I'm not hip by being anti-American. I am being realistic for being anti American. and where I live (Southern Ohio) they SAY go to college, but they don't want you LEARNING something useful. They want you to go to college on a sports scholarship, or to study something simple.

It's pretty simple to google/wikipedia what you're asking here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/School_bullying

This is what i found after a quick skim:
"Bullying is usually associated with an imbalance of power. A bully has a perceived authority over another due to factors such as size, gender, or age. Bullies are not identifiable by their appearance or group identification; rather we need to focus on how they act. The definition of bullying briefly describes actions that are exhibited by an individual that is playing the role of a bully. Boys find motivation for bully from factors such as not fitting in, physically weak, short-tempered, who their friends were, and the clothes they wore. Girls on the other hand, result from factors like not fitting in, facial appearance, emotional, overweight, and academic status. In both sexes, a speech impediment of some sort (such as stutter) can also become the target of a bully.

Individuals that choose to be a bully are not typically born with the characteristic. It is a result from the treatment they receive from authority figures, including parents. Bullies often come from families that use physical forms of discipline. This somewhat turns the tables on the bully, making them the victim. Unfortunately, this leads to a strategy of bully or be bullied."

TL;DR a feeling of inadequancy and repressed negative emotions imposed by authority figures are the two driving factors for bullies.

It's because they're jealous and want to make themselves feel better by putting you down. Think of it this way, they'll probably be working in a gas station 20 years from now and you'll be a scientist or something.
