Can anybody recommend a good, free virus scan/removal software? Let me be clear, I'm not asking for information on where to illegally download a commercial product -- I'm looking for something that's freeware but actually effective.

Any suggestions?

MalwareBytes does the trick. Do a full scan, make sure to do the scan while in safe mode. MalwareBytes is powerful and it's low-BS.

AVG is quite popular and works pretty well.
I, myself, use avast! It's also free and I prefer it to AVG for some reason. Can recommend both of them, just take your pick!

AVG?
I think it's the best if you're not willing to pay money [sub]or *ahem* obtain them via "unsavoury" means...[/sub]
Argh. Another dirty pirate.

I have a 320GB HDD and 200GB of it is "cracked" so to speak...

Avast, AVG, Panda Cloud, Microsoft Security Essentials (which is apparently pretty good)...

I use Avast, but you have plenty of options. If you pay for anti-virus software, you're wasting your money, if you pirate, you're wasting your time.

avast home edition and avg home edition are both entirely free, none of that trial bullshit.

BTW if you download the "google pack" you will have the option of downloading and installing "Spyware doctor" made by PC tools. Its powerfull but heavy on the system....well my system anyway. The google pack is free and so is all the software that they offer. Its like free, full Promo releases.

Did I ever say I was a pirate?
No. I offered him advice. If you want me to remove it I will.
Read the italics of my post. I guess you didn't get it lol

Avast! or AVG Free are probably the two best, I've got AVG scanning my machine every day, seem to get by OK
