Quick GTA 4 question

I know it's not the greatest GTA in the world, but it amuses me sometimes. And that's all you really want sometimes.

However, I'm about to buy the addons for GTA 4, The Lost and damned and Ballade of Gay Tony.
And I have a question.

I haven't finished the main story of GTA 4.
How will these addons work?
Can I select which one I want to play as?
Do I have to finish GTA 4 before I can start LaD, and finish that for BoGT?

Please enlighten me on this simple, yet tricky business.

Just pause, select new game and select whichever one you want to play. Simples.

To understand the rest of the stories, it is recommended, but not anecissary, to finish the main story. You'll understand some of the stories regarding the background of characters and missions better. The other two are stand alone and can be played without the original copy (on the PC that is. I don't know about the x-box).

The Ballad of Gay Tony is insane...its awesome.

You could do with knowing the backstory from The Lost & Damned & the original though.

If I understand it well, I can select what "game" I start by selecting a new game. But it's advised to finish the original story first.
