I want to give 'Dynasty Warriors' a shot and noticed there are at least two variations of almost every game.

Can you tell me if I need every version of i.e. 'Dynasty Warriors 6' to get the full experience or is 'Dynasty Warriors 6 Empires' just an enhanced versions of the original? And how does 'Strikeforce' fit into the canon? Where does 'Samurai Warriors' tie into?

The "Empires" games are a lot different than the core games. They add some strategy elements and remove most of the story. Personally, I'd stick to the main games until you're used to them.

As far as the "canon"...DW is set in China c. 2nd century and SW is set in Japan c. 16th century, so the only times they cross over are in the crazy time-bending Warriors Orochi games. Just so you know, all of those games are based on historical events (or the novelization of historical events), though Koei has seen fit to put their own spin on it.

The Empires versions of the games add the Empires game mode, and I heard 6 Empires added more than that. In Empires mode you either do it historically(where all the armies and territories are preset), or you pick who will lead your army as well as a few officers and what territory you start in. You then start off with some territory in China and must conquer other territories to add to your empire. Basically the whole goal is to conquer all of China. The actual gameplay is like the other games, but in between fights it goes to an overview of China. This is where you make all of your decisions for what to do with your empire(hiring troops, setting taxes, forming alliances, etc). It adds a strategical element to the game. It's overall pretty fun.

I see! Does this mean that if I buy the 'Empires' versions I get the original plus the added strategy part? And only the 'Xtreme' games are actual AddOns?

the empire games throws the story stuff out in favor of a more risk like game and the xtremes are purely add ons or expansion packs

Do you have a Playstation 2 lying around?

Plug it into the TV and start playing some Dynasty Warriors 4.

Or 3 if you can't find 4. I'd call them the strongest titles in the series.

I disagree. Start with either 3 or 5.

4 had way too many instances of recycled levels, and many missions were slow paced to the point of Sun Ce telling you to sit and wait with no enemies to fight.

Yes, I realized that 3 should be added to my list of recommendations.

Though I personally prefer 4, 3 is also a very good choice.

Didn't care much for 5 though.

ok you've proabley heard this already from others but

Dynasty warriors 6 centers around historical battles and the laughly bad story. you play one of the many historical heros and you basically just beat up foes and level up.

Empires tries to vary up the formula by adding a paper thin (but somewhat amusing) stratagey element. you can now sort of control the bonuses you start with at the begining of each battle and if you work the system right you can effectivley controll the difficulty of said battle. theres a bare bones create a character so it encourages you to do your own thing...but really your just adding more steps to the beat up everything formula. i know this may sound negative but i actually love the games i'm just being frank and honest

strikeforce is a port of a psp game with a graphic upgrade for the consoles. basically since it's a psp port the battle fields are smaller, the enemy count is way down and it feels unpolished. they add some gimics like equipment or giant statue bosses but really it just feels like a smaller version of dynasty warriors 6.

Heh. Seems like people get divided mainly between 4 and 5. Suppose it's a matter of personal preference. At least neither is like Devil May Cry 2.

Just get 3. That's when the series peaked for me. I can only mash square for so long before even I get bored with it.

I don't remember much from 5, other than that I had problems with the musou-attacks, specifically Gan Ning's. It was much more effective in 3 and 4, while in 5 it was barely controllable.
