I've never found a hat and I've played for about eighty hours or so since hats were introduced.
Luck is on your side.

I've played TF2 for about 300 hours or so, and just recently found my very first hat.
I was pretty damn happy to find it, too. Quite lovely.

Ok so I have been playing TF2 since June of this year (I bought the game the sunday before it went free to play as my luck would have it) and have put about 60 hours into the game and during this time I have only found one hat. So I would like to know if hats are always this rare or how often you usualy get one as a random find. Thanks
60 hours? Ha! I've played over 400 hours and I got my first hat drop just earlier this week.

What was it, if you don't mind me asking?

My first hat drop was a German Gonzilla at about 300 hours. God, that thing was ugly.

It was a Cosa Nostra Cap, the one for the Spy. I liked it, but I usually use the Saharan Spy set anyway so I traded it for a frying pan :)

I've got roughly 1700 hours, and I've had 7-8 hat drops myself.

You're better off scrapping items for metal for hats, in my opinion. I've done it at least 6 times.

I also still have my very first hat drop. Never gonna trade/craft it.

I've got 177 hours and only one hat drop. Consider yourself lucky.

Alternatively, you can always craft a hat with the other drops you have.

I'm what you might call an obsessive TF2 player. In all the 1700+ hours that I've played the game, I've probably gotten about seven or eight hat drops (granted a fair amount of my play time was before hats were introduced). The rest were either obtained by crafting, trading or game promos.

Basically don't rely on the game to give you hats via drops. It's much better to craft them yourself or trade if you must (though I try to stay away from the trading aspect. The type of people that frequent trading servers frighten me).

On a related note, I happened to get A Rather Festive Tree as a drop last week, which I felt was quite appropriate for this time of year.

I find it funny how Hats are regarded with such value.

For example, I had the shaman mask (for pre ordering From Dust on steam), and some randomer saw it and Traded me the concheror, the buff banner, and the black box for it, I was amazed how highly the hats are regarded by some members of the TF2 community. :/

It was a shit hat anyway mouahahaha >:D
... ... ...=x You could have gotten so much more for that hat. You literally could have gotten every weapon in the game for it.
Haha he's right dude. I don't think there's any hat worth that little. you got ripped off big time.

OT I have just over 700 hours played and I believe I've had about 4 or 5 hat drops. Maybe 6. I can't really keep track of them because I don't always keep the ones I get from drops and I've got several from crafting too.

Again, it's so much easier to just craft hats than waiting around for drops. Although I did get 2 in the space of a week once xD
