I know QTE's (Quick-Time Events) are still commonly used. All i'm really interested in,
is why? Why do developers use them, just to make cutscenes more emersive?
Or maybe some people feel like they contribute to (some) games.

My question for you is very simple: How do you think about QTE's in games and
(especially if you think the are a good thing) do you know a game where it is
actually appropriate or put into good use?

Sorry for wrong forum post.

It may seems like an interactive cut scene but I'd like to watch them without having to worry about dying.

in GOW i get really tense sometimes with the QTE's, but thats mainly on god/titan mode...

thet're good when done right in games like resi 4 to stop an otherwise boring cutscene staying boring, especially since they're not too hard, they just keep you on your toes and their are no QTEs in actual gameplay

but games like god of war annoy me with them

I enjoy them. For example, RE4 put the events to good use (I call them dodge sequences) but RE5's QTE's just felt out of place. To me it makes the game feel more immersive, (if you played RE4 the scene with Krauser should come to mind) but I don't know of any other game that has these dodge sequences as well other than RE4 and RE5. Alan Wake may be able to put the QTE's to good use as well.

I don't mind Quicktime events, I just don't like it when they're overused, because to me that's lazy.

I like madworld's QTE events against some of the bosses since you actually did similar movements to your charecter (e.g on the first boss when you spin round a massive ball and chaing a few times by twirling the wiimote) and the results were quite satisfying

I hate the QTE which require you to press one button quickly and loads of times, it just doesnt make anysense. Atleast one button QTE can be seen as a reflex test, kind of

I do believe this topic has been done before....

And just like I've said before, there are good and bad ways to implement quick-time events in games. Good would be like in MadWorld and No More Heroes, in which they're a crucial part of the gameplay, and you know when they're coming. Bad would be if they were umprompted, sparse, and just plain out of place. I remember Cabela's Dangerous Hunts 2009 having them in certain places, and it felt silly. It's not a good game at all, but the poor QTE-integration is still apparent.

Cutscenes to me are supposed to be stylish breaks from gaming, not too long, not too short that gives you a brief glimpse of the story maybe from your character's point of view or someone else. Quick time events just seem like developers were making a cutscene and realised it was a bit too long so had to break it up with some arbitrary button mashing, wii stick waving, carpel tunnel causing twitch mechanic.

Also I always die, always, whenever I realize a cutscene is coming up I normally put down the controller thinking oh well I can relax and un-cramp my fingers a little bit only for my character to plummet into a ravine or die from a cinder block falling on his head because he can't take care of himself for 2 seconds without my direct attention. The whole thing makes me feel like a glorified babysitter. No Timmy, those poisonous shrubs will not give you health points.

some i can cope with but most just annoy me like the ones in cod4 and world at war, where you have to click the analog stick to stop the dogs tearing your throat to bits

sometimes i like them others i don't, it all depends on wether its needed or not. some games that make use are heavenly sword, star wars:tfu and sonic the hedgehog games, some on the other hand like resident evil and others (except re:ubrella chronicles) do not need them and just make it annoying.

I liked them in both God of War and RE4. As long as there used properly I like them.
I loved the knife fight in RE4. If the whole game had me on the edge of my seat I fell off that edge when the knifes came out. Ripping a cyclops eye out in God of War awesome.
Maybe consider adding a poll?

Depending on the game imo, on a colorful nintendo platformer-sort-of-game they're quite ok honestly. I consider them a check how wake you are playing these sugar-rush games.
They just fit.
but for example, in a fast fps it's a big no-no.

QTE's are ok, they keep you on your feet during a game, in resi 5 they did get a bit annoying, but they add to the fun of a game.

No, f**k no, hell no... no more QTE ever. Do you hear me Capcom, NO MORE QTE!
When I first played RE5 and I got to the first QTE, I wan't expecting it. I had actually set my controler down and was all ready to watch a cutscene, f**k you Capcom. They have no purpose in a cutscene. Now if you want to use button sensitive attacts (like God of War) that is fine, because is it in game, not during a cutscene.

Press "x" not to die...

Capcom and anyone else who thinks QTEs are a good thing.

Press "x" to f**k off...

Soapbox put away... for now.

They can OCCASIONALLY be done well (such as God of War). However, it's far more common for them to be poorly implemented and irritating.
