Yes i know you have to want to and i do, but the patch and gum dont work. But when i try to go cold turkey I just get really really agitated really fast. So my question is (for the ex-smokers) what worked for you

I never smoked, but I was addicted to coke,
I just replaced it with something that I enjoyed just as much.

Cold Turkey worked best for me.I quit a few months ago after having smoked for about 17 years. It's the first couple of days that are the hardest.Once you get over them it's not so bad.

It also helps if you give yourself something to look forward to,like tell yourself that at the end of the week you're going to buy yourself something nice with the money you would have spent on cigarettes

Have you tried the inhalor? I went pure cold turkey a few months ago. First few weeks were HELL but it does get better. Just try to distract yourself, if you feel like smoking call a random friend and just talk about anything, or playing a game could be good as it keeps your hands busy. You could try joining a support group or a stop smoking forum maybe? Different methods work for different people and hopefully you'll find something that works for you.

I went cold turkey, cuse, just like you, patch and gum failed me. so here i stand, a non smoker, from the cold turkey school and here's what i have to say as advice to survive it:

1: get rid of sources of fire. You'll soon find yourself smoking cigarette butts before going out without a smoke, and then you just won't quit period, now will ya?

2: force thyself to be distracted: you'd be amazed how little you feel withdrawl-wise when your napping the day away or playing a game you just can't help but get lost in.

3: there is no real three... uh... go read a book? get some excersize. watch porn with the girlfriend, iono.

Force of will. My roommate has "Quit smoking" like 19 times in the past 3 years.

I just quit one day and have been clean since. Yes it sucks for a week or two, but don't be a ***** and grind it out.

I've never smoked, but I have tried to quit candy. When I found that it was very easy for me and I'd stayed off the sweets for some time, I started again, because now I knew that should I ever want to quit I would be able to. The way I managed to quit it, after failing a number of times before, was that I did two things. First I made sure to tell myself it was great to have quit the habit, and secondly I also made sure to try to make every craving for sweets into something positive, thinking "Great! I'm getting cravings! That means I've managed to stay away from candy!" So I guess that's the best advice I can give you; keep telling yourself "I've wanted to quit for so long, and I'm so glad I've managed to pull it off!" Whenever you think ""it'd be great with a smoke right now!" remind yourself that actually, it'd be horrible, and you're glad you haven't had one.

Most importantly: Don't limit it to a few or just one cigarette a day. Don't do that, just quit cold turkey, 'cause limiting it to one a day makes you think "Ah... Soon I'll have my wonderful cigarette..." and you'll start perceeving perceeving perceiving regarding the cigarette as a kind of wonderful reward, and not as something unpleasant you're glad you've managed to stay away from.

I went cold turkey, lasted 18months, I agree it's mind over matter. Do you really, really wanna give up? If so, it should be a lot easier.

I?m actually (among other things) a hypnotist so I used self hypnosis: it?s not very hard at all ? just repeat how you want to quit over and over in your head as you?re falling asleep. Most hypnotists use the cow-fart method (trick you into thinking smokes smell like cow-farts) but I don?t like this because I think it?s one of the things that makes ex-smokers really obnoxious to smoke around.
What you should do is repeat to yourself that whenever you want a smoke, you will have a glass of water instead. When you?re agitated from not having a smoke that is your body?s way of telling you that the cells in your body that are addicted to nicotine are dying off from being cut off of their supply. The best way to replace these cells is by drinking lots of water.
I actually unintentionally hypnotized a friend over the phone using this method. After the conversation (where I repeated the water method a couple of times) he said that every time he reached for a smoke, he would hear my voice suggesting he have a glass of water. And that?s how it works, hypnosis wont make things effortless but it will provide a reminder. You just have to reinforce it a couple of nights a week.

Cold turkey might work, and if you want a decent reward, try this: check your bank account, figure out how much smoking costs, save the smoking money for a year and have a nice vacation. All earned by not smoking.

I don't know what all the 'cold turkey' business is about, you make it sound like a crack addiction. When smoking was starting to seriously screw up my health (monstrous acid reflux) I quit, just like that. I'd been a smoker for 8 years, and it really wasn't a difficult thing to do... if you want to quit, just do it. It really is mind over matter.

I suppose it might help you to get rid of the undoubtably large number of lighters in your household, and other things you consciously or uncounsciously link to smoking.

Snus, its like dip but cleaner and easy to do, will get your nic fix and then its easier to go cold turkey from there.

OP I know how you feel. I'm trying to quit right now but all I've seemed to accomplish is cut down considerably... which is and accomplishment to go from a pack a day to about 2-5 cigs a day. Truthfully I would just try cutting back little by little. It may not be the quickest way but it is effective in keeping yourself sane.

Just ease off of them and eventually just stop. For about 3 or 4 days (maybe longer) you will feel like shit. Take a few ibuprofens and deal with it. You will either sleep all the time (which helps to get over withdrawal) or you will be unable to sleep. Insomnia and Hypersomnia are pretty normal with any withdrawals.

But I digress. Your best bet is to just ease slowly off them. Set how many cigarettes your gonna smoke a day and then smoke that many. If you fail (you will fail) slap yourself on the wrist and do better the next day. When I got down to about 3 cigs a day I quit cold turkey. For the first day I felt just light headed a little cruddy. The second day I was constantly salivating and grinding my teeth. I laid on the couch, slept and tried not to think about it. Third day was about the same. Fourth day I was feeling a bit better and I progressively got better from there on out. I had much more phlegm when I woke up then when I was actually smoking but it helped to just hack it up and get on with my day.

For about a month I dealt with some minor psychological "addictions" just wanting to have a cig when I got stressed but in that case if you need it just chew a piece of gum. If not just take a few deep breaths and get over it. After that it was kinda just living the life of a non smoker.

Its not easy but its nowhere near as hard as they try to sell it.

TL:DR 3 day hump period is the worst. If you can get through that, you can get through any of it.

Pro Tip: Being sick is the best time to quit. You dont want to smoke anyway and the withdrawal is usually outdone by the fact you feel like shit anyway.

Want it more.

I smoked 2 packs a day for almost 10 years. I tried quitting many times, but never wanted it enough. Finally I reached a point where I wanted to quit more than I wanted a smoke, and that was what did it for me. And for me it had to be cold turkey. I've never done moderation very well - I'm an all or nothing kind of person.

It also helped to realize and recognize that I was going to be a miserable asshole while I was going through the worst of the withdrawal symptoms. I let my girlfriend know that I would call her in a month, and then I took out my pain on everyone around me. And there was enough to go around. ;-)

Two ways.

Way one: Man the fuck up. You get agitated? So be it. YOu're going to be a miserable prick for a month or two, but thats the way it is.

Way two: Varenicline (Chantix). Side effects include wanting to kill yourself (I actually knew someone who tried while on this stuff. Powerful drug).
