You should have contested it. I did that with Dell. I took out an accidental damage warranty to replace my keyboard. Later that year the power cord breaks and they say the warranty doesn't cover accidental amage. I gave them all kinds of shit until they eventually broke down.

I had something similar happen but got the halo reach slim, it's amazingly quiet and the 250 GB HDD isn't to be scoffed at, go for slim if you want to keep your game collection otherwise invest in whatever platform suits you

Feel sorry for you man, my first Xbox 360 red ringed just after Christmas 2009 and I bought it the same year Bioshock came out. They sent me new one cause warrenty was still in effect luckily enough and it's been fine so far.

I suggest you either get one of the new slims or search for a later version of the old White Xbox, they seem to last longer than the first generation ones. Or you could get an Elite that lasts a long time as well and I think comes with wireless.

They don't fix their problem hardware, they charge you for services that are free on every other platform, and they nickle and dime you every chance they get.
What? Really?

I'm quite sure that EVERY other product in existence has a set term warranty. If it fails outside of that time period you would be expected to pay for any repair service. PS3 certainly does 134 quid last time I checked.

Do you think nintendo wouldn't charge for a replacement if your N64 packed in? There's no way inhell that it is still in warranty.

I know the logical and most likely cheaper step would be to buy another one but seriously dude. Out of warranty products that fail will always have a fee to repair them! It's he way this shizzle works

The great thing about PC is that when they break, you can just google the fix, which always work. Just stay off the dodgy website and it won't break at all. and dude, it's just a xbox, your life isn't fucked.
Lol
Google from a broken PC.
Yeah sure, if you don't know anyone else in the world with a computer, or you don't have a second computer at your house, or you don't have a smart phone, or you don't have a cell phone at all, then you're going to have to google it on your broken PC because you've got "Safe mode with networking" as an option. If you're going to try and invalidate my point, don't be stupid about it.
And why couldn't you fix your Xbox 360 like that?

As soon as mine dies I shall get a slim. Send off my current Xbox and sell that, making the slim cheaper! :D

Or you could buy a gaming PC and be set for life. :p I jest, I jest. Keep your pants on.

Sorry to hear about that shit, man. I've found that, when talking to representatives like that, always get their name and attempt to get a clear, solid confirmation that what you're being promised is going to happen. I had similar problems when trying to get a guy out to fix my internet, they apparently "forgot" to note down that I wanted him to stop by. By then a week had passed.

Sadly I doubt there's much you can do. No wonder you're steamed, though. I think anyone would be. Getting shafted ain't fun.
Set for how long...three weeks to 6 months when everything in the computer becomes as good as having an amiga taped to the desk?

Except that most of my Nintendo products got put through a fairly punishing tour of service.

And they still work fine. I can measure most of their ages in terms approaching or surpassing the term "decade" rather than "2-3 years"

Its not the fact that they're charging you for a replacement, its the fact that it broke down so early. This is a problem that Microsoft new about, and they still pushed out the 360 anyways, knowing full well that it had these kinds of problems.

And then there's the whole thing where your 360 can destroy your disks if you accidentally bump it. This is something Nintendo never had to deal with last generation. Sony never had this problem.

On my old computer, the harddisk melted. I'm pretty sure that wasn't due to a virus or something similar.
Wow, you must not take very good care of your property. Or it was just shit, either one really, or maybe both.
My old computer had a damaged motherboard, most likely due to a failure during manufacturing. I think that's what caused it.

We had numerous bugs with it, mostl of them related to sound. Also, crashes. Tons of crashes. In fact, In the last months I used it, it tended to bluescreen 5-15 minutes after startup.
We also had to reinstall Windows quite often.

I hated that PC, almost as much as the one I had before that, which were incapable of playing high tech 3D games like Morrowind.
That was in 2004-2005.

I inherited both of my old computers from Dad.

So, yeah, it was just shit.

Yeah, I got the red rings on Christmas Eve a few years back... on a friend's xbox... Last christmas, I got one of the shiny new ones... You should prolly get that, since you already have a games library... PS3s are cool too.

If your set on getting a new XBox 360, make the jump to a slim. Shell out 100 if you want because it's cheaper, but it'll probably red ring on you before long.

The real issue is that Microsoft's stuff isn't that durable. I still have a working NES. Granted, it takes a bit of coaxing to work, but it still does. Switch to a different manufacturer.

I'd go with a pc or slim, slim being the cheaper option. I think the Ps3 is better than 360, I've had mine for up on 3 years now and no problems. I am running out of hard drive space though.

That's weird, because when I had the RRoD on my first Xbox, I was told in no uncertain terms that the warranty would not be extended, and I accepted that. Other than that, the customer service I received from Microsoft was the best I've ever had, and indeed they even returned the replacement a week earlier than they said it would be (they'd said two weeks on the phone, and in emails, but it only took one week to arrive from Berlin). Fortunately for me with regards to my current machine, my second Xbox (the replacement) was stolen and so my current, third, one is from the insurance, and as such the warranty was replaced on that.

My point is that Microsoft aren't the evil greedy pigs everyone makes them out to be, and they told me exactly what their policy on warranties was and it was fine by me, so yes, in this case you were misinformed. It's not a problem with Microsoft's "shitty customer service", it's a problem with one guy who got things mixed up, and you're getting butt-hurt where there's no need to be. So either shut up and put up, or ditch it and get a PS3, either way don't complain on the internet about something that you're taking way out of proportion.

PC MOTHERDUCKER.

I kid of course, but we know it would happen during any console war anyway.
Personally, I put handheld consoles above consoles anyway c:

... what was this thread about?

That my friend is why you always get everything in writing. If they had of sent you a official email stating that they would extend your warranty then they would be bound by law to follow through.
i'm sorry for your loss, but the quote pretty much says it here. without it in writing, looks like you don't have a leg to stand on. personally i'd see if i could get it repaired by somebody outside of microsoft, failing that get an older console. i don't see the point in 'slim' versions of consoles, just another way to get money outta you...
