So basically, I'm an RA at my university (one of many things I have to do to pay for grad school) and I've got kind of a problem in my dorm.

So basically, we've got a few people who have become increasingly disruptive the last few months. It's been everything from stupid inconveniences like jamming all of the buttons on the elevator (very slow elevator, 25 floor building) so that it takes forever to knocking over trash cans and leaving the hallway windows open at night (where my school is it's been -10 at night for the last 3 weeks) to very serious things like wrecking bathroom stalls and using towels to clog and overflow toilets and leaving sinks on in the bathroom. There's also been a few isolated cases of people throwing food around in the hallways.

I mean seriously. If this was like middle school I would overlook it. These are adult college students. I try to be flexible about a lot of things, I happily look the other way when it's stuff like partying and drinking within reason and as long as it's not bothering anyone else and I only take a strong stance against smoking (tobacco and weed) because the dorm is a smoke-free building (and it smells horrible). But it's graduated from simple nuisance to actually destructive vandalism and I can't just let it go at this point. I'm also worried it's going to start reflecting poorly on me, since I'm the one who is supposed to be in charge.

The problem is that this is only happening at night and I have no idea who it is and no way to find out, and it's been escalating. My thoughts are that it is just one or two people behind all or most of it but as I said I have no way of knowing who aside from staying up all night trying to catch the asshole in the act.

I just don't have any idea what to do at this point.

Talk to your university police department. If people are actually damaging school property, wrecking bathroom stales and that sort of thing then you should just take it to the police and let them sort it out. Even if they don't end up doing anything about it you'll have done your due diligence and it can't reflect poorly on you.

Yeah contact the Police or the University security staff. Don't endanger your own safety by waiting up at night and then trying to confront the perpetrators, especially if they're drunk as you're even less likely to get through to them and more likely to get decked. Don't feel bad about it either, that's the sort of behavior I'd expect from 12 year old never mind University students.
