Has the injection of 'realism' into games destroyed Racing Games.

For me yes, games like Need for Speed were brilliant because I could do ridiculous things like corckscrew my car when I drive fast over a bridge and get some air, but now i'm lucky to get some decent air.

Realism for me has made racing games less fun, with the exception of GRID, but that's because i'm making a team.

This is why burnout revenge is one of my favourite racing games of all time.
None of this paradise city nonsense, no sir.

need for speed, burnout and the like aren't my sort of racing game. mario kart, on the other hand, is amazing but they cant really be talked about in terms of 'realism' seeing as you shoot shells and use mushrooms for speed boosts. snowboard kids on the 64 was also a great racing game (i preferred it over mario kart 64) and that wasnt very realistic either. maybe racing games are more fun when realism and logic are put into big, weighed down with cement then thrown off a trans-atlantic ferry

I have to say, my favourite racing game is Extreme-G III, mostly because weapons are for the most part irrelevant - it's all about how well you drive. And breaking the sound barrier. That's always fun.

The trouble is, a lot of games these days, not just racing ones, seem to be too focused on realism. Games are supposed to be a break from the real world! Escapism and all that! Why would you want to get away from the real world into a game that'll kill you in two hits or punish you for not shifting into the right gear every 15 seconds?

Exactly, thats the general problem with racing games, this whole real world facsination is making them boring because we don't want them like that.

Hmmm, fair point on Mario Kart, but I never liked it to begin with :/

Hmm I for one love realistic racing games, forza was shear bliss for me. Just because it requires focus and an understanding of how a car reacts to input road/tires/lat Gs/ etc.

For me, thats one of things that makes most modern racers terrible, how you can't do well unless you've read a car manual several times over, had a pop quiz test and got a diploma on car engineering. I just want to get a car and race. None of this set-up rubbish.
