True actually, our various races tend to go out of the window once we find aliens.

This seems to be implying that there's overt racism in video games generally. The only time I've ever heard the n-word dropped in a game was in Grand Theft Auto, and that was by stereotypical black gang bangers.

Racism is the most over hyped and overexposed topic that exists mostly in peoples minds, and hardly ever in functioning society.

Well, science fiction normally try's to comment on society by holding up a mirror to the world, rather then analyzing it directly. Therefore, Racism as we know it is rare, BUT you find vicious hatred between inhabitants of different planets, leading to anger and injustice, while it's demonstrated that both sides are, at there heart, the same.

Science fiction usually addresses real world subjects by introducing them through aliens. If a science fiction story talks about racism it will most likely be the aliens discriminating against others of their kind, or an extremely human-like species and how we discriminate against them and/or they against us. You can thank the political correctness movement for our having to tapdance around touchy issues today, but it's not exactly a new idea. Many of the great satirical works from previous centuries do the same thing, in a slightly different way. You disguise your message because saying it outright is socially unacceptable.

Maybe in games, perhaps. It's pretty real in society as a whole.

Well we all like things that are similar to ourselves. So all people with hats like other people with hats but don't like people with gloves. Until some aliens show up beacuse they wear neither and are aliens.

I usually find I'm slaughtering lots of white people, why isn't it black people and white people? Why is it only questionable when black people are being killed?

I dunno, there's a Chinese kid who gets on our bus who is racially abused by a little pig faced man. I told him to keep his fucking mouth shut and he never bothered him again, it'd been going on for too long. I live in the south of England, which is predominantly white, and people of different colours stand out like a sore thumb. Such a pity that people need to take out their frustration on someone for such a trivial, unjustified reason. Maybe it isn't an issue around where you live, but here it can well be :S

EDIT: My friend from Cyprus has naturally tanned skin, and was beaten shitless and left with a broken nose, for looking like a 'paki'.

I think the idea behind the lack of space-faring interhuman racism (I made the last phrase up) is that once we discover life outside of our solar system, things like skin color which set different humans apart are no longer considered important. Once the discovery happens, we might be more inclined to define what makes someone a human rather than what makes someone caucasian (or any other race).

Plus all the social parallels and all that.

From what I've seen, it's usually not so much a case of the human race uniting because "we're not so different after all", but the human race working together to gang up on a race that's even more different. It's like when whites and blacks team up to oppress homosexuals; they might hate each other, but the third party is perceived as being even more different, and must therefore be destroyed.

I mean, heck, just look at Gears of War. Black guy and a white guy, joining forces to kill the alien guys. Of course, you have to consider context, but if it's "kill them because they're aliens and we're humans", it's still racism, just more intergalatic and plasma powered.

I like the Watchmen theory that only an interference by an outside lifeform could unite the human race.

Problem is that we are human's we need to hate something, it's just a fact. In order for us to really function togeteher we need a side to be our enemies, since we havent found anything better we turn against other humans. Once we find aliens then people will realize that they are the ones more different than us and earn our hatred.

How many games really address issues of racism in the first place? In fact, Sci-Fi or fantasy games are the only place where I see anything close to an exploration of the issue of racism, because it doesn't offend anybody when the discrimination is against lizard people, and the ones acting racist look like mutated birds.

The recent Turok had the protagonist insulted because of his Indian heritage, so that's at least one you've missed. Though you should count yourself lucky.

because here in the US we have a proud history of killing or subjugating people based on skin color, in fact we have it based on alot of things, religion, part of the world your parents are from, but skin color is the most recent.

Honestly I figure by the time we reach space (without Alien interference/technology like Mass effect) the current races will be bred out, we'll have a sort of Eurasian mixed with Polynesian sort of look, with quite a lot of variation on skin colour, but no real obvious racial characteristics. A lot of indigenous and smaller ethnic population will be breed out/assimilated into a Chinese/Caucasian/African/Latin American mix.

Also throw into the chaos, once cosmetic surgery becomes cheaper, safer and 100% reversible.

Plus we will have Aliens to discriminate against.
