It's too bad to hear about the game, as along with the OP, i too saw this on sale and considered getting it. But now i think i'll pass, maybe pick up Doom 3 for $6 instead, off steam.

It probably has one of the best FPS combat I've played in a very long time. The gunplay, the hilarious number of ways you can dispatch your enemies and the animations. All top notch. Heartily recommended it if you want an enjoyable shooter to play through the weekend.

The story's pretty hot garbage though so don't expect anything worthwhile from the writing.

Edit: Oh yeah, the car combat sucks too.

Don't bother unless it's extremely cheap. The shooting is fun and amusing enough but considering it has no final boss, the worst ending in a shooter I've experienced in ages which is par for the course but honestly it's no doom, quake, or wolfenstein. It's extremely pretty in spots but you'll see some ugly pixelation in other spots, racing is fun and amusing (more so with a controller) but overall I feel sorry for anyone who spent more than 5 bucks.

Exceptionally average. Nothing particularly remarkable about it (except for the animations). The shooting mechanics are clunky, the guns lack weight, the car driving bits are blasé.

It's like Borderlands 2 without the variety and aesthetic.

It's good to kill time with for a few bucks, I suppose.

It was pretty good, but I have trouble trying to recall why it was so hyped. The only thing that's remarkable or unique about it is the animations, and even then, you'll be wowed the first couple of times you hit a bandit near his feet and see him stumble realistically, but after a while, you realise this is more or less a bog standard shooter with some moderately fun driving. There is some value in that, especially as the style of shooting is far closer to the old days of quake and doom than the current trend for realism and cover, but it still doesn't quite nail the pace of those classics. Some of the gadgets are pretty fun, especially the wingsticks, but really, it's nothing you haven't seen before, it's just fairly well done.

All in all, though, it's definitely worth a look at the sort of price (under ten british pounds) that you'll find it for today, just don't expect much of it.

Its crappy and nothing at all like IDs' classic franchises. I played it for about ten minutes then boredom set in.
For just coming on here, I think you could've said a BIT more in detail.
For just joining the forums, I think you could've cut the guy some fricken slack.
I did, actually. You just don't know what I WANTED to say.

It's a phenomenally average shooter.

Decent weapons, serviceable shooting mechanics and fantastic animations. It's quite pretty too. Sadly the aesthetics are as forgettable as... a forgettable thing.

Also, there's a nasty bug on PC that was never fully fixed that caused ridiculous texture pop-in every time you so mach as turn around.

Story is just plain old video game drivel. "It's the apocalypse, Mad Max flavour. Go shoot something." That's it. Barely even manages to string the shootouts together.

The game forces you into boring vehicle sections by making you bloody well commute between each mission.

I just stopped playing partway through. I didn't rage-quit or anything (hurr hurr). I forgot that I was playing one day and never remembered to pick it up again.

If you have some money that's about to expire and nothing better to use it on than I suppose you could do worse than Rage.

If criticizing a person who's only just joined is your idea of "cutting some slack" then I feel sorry for you. For to be so critical of people you cannot be particularly happy.
Take it from another angle: He practically just joined here to make criticisms. He literally JUST walked in to say "Rage was shit". If you're going to bother to go to the trouble, say why.

Gameplay wise it's average. In terms of pushing graphics forward it was well done. The whole massive textures thing is the way games are heading and ID have seen that and are leading the way.

It was alright, though I don't remember much of it other then having to tweak the settings so it doesn't look like everything is made out of clay, and it being unnecessarily big.(21gigs) Was hoping it feels kinda like a linear Fallout 3 kinda.

I was really looking forward to this game it looked like a mix between Fallout 3 and Borderlands and it was by id, but then everything started to fall apart first the problems with some graphics cards and the rumors that the gameplay is kinda boring and repetitive. Still, I was so hyped I bought it anyways and yeah it's fucking rubbish, enemy ai and animations won't save it if the rest of the game is just not good. Racing is shit and you need to do it to advance in story, missions are dull, and the graphics suck, you know how in Borderlands textures take time to load and if you move too fast it goes all blury, well it is about ten times worse in Rage and somtimes the textures won't load at all, some of the plants and other random stuff in the world are flat not 3d.
One more thing when I bought it I also bought Singularity which I found in a bin, and I had tons more fun with it than with Rage.

Yeaaaaaaaaaaah.
Only played the demo and I thought it was really dull. Nice looking, great animations, fucking boring as a game.

I lost interest after a few hours, glad i only borrowed it. Which is a shame because the actual shooting was really good (great animation, decent AI). It just lacked the interesting weapons and charm of ID's past games or similar games (fallout, borderlands) :/

I think i read something that described it as " a really good tech demo". I think thats quite accurate.
Quoted in total to second everything that's been said.

I actually bought it and I was... pretty underwhelmed.

Still, if OP is a 'fan' of everything id, I think it's an important title, as it's really mainly a tech demo to sell the id Tech 5 engine... not sure if that worked out alright yet, but it's obvious that it's 'inspired' other engines.

I must say that I enjoyed playing the game, even though the driving annoyed me and the ending was a bit... abrupt, to say the least. The shooting and moving on foot is pretty much Doom/Quake/Wolfenstein 5.0, which I enjoyed. The texture pop-in is pretty horrible, no matter what console or far-out PC hardware you throw at it (or throw it at), but that's part of how the engine works... if you've played, say, Borderlands 2, you already know the deal, even though it's 'just' a modified Unreal Engine 3. No texture - basic texture - OK texture - move someplace else, and the little texture pop-in or crawl-in sub-game starts anew... a little harsh on the eyes, but super good for resource management and that small memory footprint I hear.

From a gameplay experience standpoint, I think Bulletstorm on Unreal Engine 3.5 was much better/fresher/more fun.

If OP is into post-apocalyptic FPS wild rides, I think RAGE fits the bill. If OP wants to stay in touch with what id is up to, RAGE is a must have (played). At no point did it impress me like Wolfenstein 3D or the various Dooms and Quakes did. As a playable tech demo, I liked it.

I thought it was crap. Mind you, very well made "crap," but still nothing short of it.

If you're an old fan of id games, don't expect this title to live up to those memories. It's like the developers had set out to make a game as bland as it is pretty and fascinating to look at.

I mean the game had great visual storytelling, and I remember the buzz before the title had hit stores coming from everyone. But once we had a chance to play it, I, myself, couldn't do nothing but shake my head on how soulless the game was.

First off - as a first person shooter - the guns looked alright, but there wasn't any charm to them like the guns in the Fallout series. Nothing equivalent to the choo choo gun (the railroad rifle in Fallout), and firing them felt like I was firing pallets.

The game is know for it's death animations, but in game they felt like a practice in futility because they did everything possible to make the deaths as unspectacular as possible, even with all the blood and gore.

As for the story, just forget it. It was one of those stories you could pretty much predict and know everything after the first 5mins a playing. And the way they told it was bland and uninteresting. Just another tale about being some common tribes "only hope" against an organisation know as the "authority." No Lord Humonngus here. You will pretty much spend two thirds of the game not knowing who the badguys are because they're so badly implementing that you won't even care.

If there's one word to describe the game - out of all the words I used earlier - I'd say soulless would be the word to best describe that game. Also crap.

:p

Ask me when the PC version WORKS.
Ooh. What this guy said.

When I actually bothered trying it, 50% of the time it would crash on loading screens, it had abysmally ugly textures in shadowed areas and just inside of places, my pistol bugged out and the chamber was sitting in the upper-right corner of my screen while I was still holding the gun like normal, and the texture pop-in, OH GOD, the pop-in.

The animations were pretty good, but that's about the only nice thing I have to say about it.

It's a good game, but it's ultimately just an average and forgettable experience.
You're not missing much by skipping this game.

It's a decent game, but it doesn't do enough new to be truly memorable. I finished it months ago, and all I remember now was how fucking gorgeous the sky was half the time, and how mad Wing Sticks were.
