I took a hammer to my toaster the other day, not because it was broken mind you, I just wanted to see if I could fix what wasn't broken, naturally I failed in my quest and ended up on the floor surrounded by tiny pieces crying over the loss of my much beloved warm bread and buttery meal.
This technique of fixing the unbroken seems to very popular with big development companies, I used to call this the "EA EFFECT" but it would seem that UBISoft are jumping on the bandwagon, We could call it the "MASS EFFECT" yes not the best pun in the world but I have made it now so lets move on.

Rainbow Six was first produced by Red Storm Entertainment which was founded back in 1996 by Tom Clancy. The game itself was very complex, it required a lot of planning, You could take one team with you and send another on a preplanned course, you had to decided would both teams link up and certain sections or both go it alone, would you go in hot and heavy or swift and silent, you may have taken losses but you pressed on knowing that there was innocent lives at stake (feel glorified feelings here). Sadly Red Storm was bought by UBI in 2000 and in March 2008 UBI severed all working relations with Tom Clancy for royalties, since then UBI have moved as far away from the original concept as my rewrite of the film Alien with Dan Akroyd's famous extraterrestrial character as the focus of terror, unlike UBI I know that my rewrite might be awful.

The first thing you are greeted with when entering the game is a customizable character which I thought was a nice touch, I was able to change my weapon loadouts and armour and even the colour of it, Then I started to realise the problems with this, one being that the original game would let you do this anyway, not just yourself but your team mates as well, If I changed my armour colour my team mates stayed the same defeating the purpose of camouflage not that the game takes this into consideration anyway but this kind of individuality doesn't happen in military organizations, hence why you didn't see any of the entry men of the SAS wearing bright pink tutus as they bust into the Iranian embassy. The ranking and unlock system also seemed pointless, the new gear didn't seem useful when I unlocked it and why did I start as a private?? Surely they wouldn't let a new recruit lead a highly trainer anti-terrorist unit would they?

They game itself looked nice, but its the unreal engine so there really isn't any point discussing that. The gameplay was a bitter disappointment, It just lacked any of the tactical element that the original games used to carry, everything was preplanned for you and the only options that you were left to make were either attack from downstairs or upstairs, or attack through door or go upstairs and repeal down the side smashing through the windows and increasing your collateral damage bill. As with the original games your team mates could be trusted to get the job done, sure they might take a loss or two but thats the price you pay, sadly this is not the case with Vegas. The AI enhancement that was promised from the first game isn't visible and your team mates still require you to hold there hands, The most fun that can be had with them is sending them into certain doom, but even UBI have managed to spoil that as the gleeful idiots can not even die right, which requires you to inject them with what seems to be the best drugs in the world to make you recover from bullet wounds in about 10 seconds.

The audio levels in this just frustrate me, developers seem to forget that in real life situations involving gun fire, that you speaking voice becomes almost impossible to hear, yet all the voice acting in the game, which mind you is also just terrible, is on a spoken level making it impossible to hear for the most part. The story along with the AI improvements are just not present in the game which is a shame really considering that Tom Clancy was a story writer, you would of thought they would have kept him on to do that.

Quick summary then

Graphics: 8, as I said its the unreal engine

Sound: 6, What I can hear you?

Gameplay: 5, Its not really a tactical shooter anymore which is a shame, and the game is just generally poor

Lasting appeal: 5 Its a rental game at best, as for the multiplayer there are better ones out there.

Overall 5/10

I know this review slammed into the game pretty hard but it did answer most questions I had about the game.

Thanks for this review. :)

I actually agree with all the points you make in your review and I was a big fan of the original rainbow 6 on the pc with all the planning and stuff you would have to do before hand however there is one thing you did not mention, which for me at least was this games saving grace and that is multiplayer co-op.

The co-op on this game is actually really good and it does play like a top tactical shooter, sure your ai team mates are dumb and blunder past alerting enemies when they should be sneaking etc and yes in the end we did mainly use them as cannon fodder on the outdoor areas so we could locate our targets but if you are say attacking a sealed room with multiple doors they can be really good for example...

There are 2 doors into a room, I set a breaching charge on one, the ai to breach the other and my friend sneaks round to the window, blow both charges he pops from the window and the half dozen or so terrorists dead before the last of the breaking glass hits the ground, played well on co-op this game does have some really good "damn we are pro" and "sas don't got shit on us" moments.

Angry... You really have issues dude... I love Rainbow Six: Vegas 2 and find my-self playing the game a lot. But first off, I also found your review to not be funny at all... I mean really, the first paragraph was completely pointless. You also failed to point out the P.E.C system (Persistant Elite Creation [your in-game avatar])now transfers from Singleplayer to versus to Co-OP(or any combination there-of), not just multiplayer itself. And I am going to agree on thing sometimes i found the sound to be drowned out in a gun fight or the music itself. but i simply turned down the music. and the "tactical" gameplay is more tactical than the Metal Gear Solid series which i only only used a few moves. Now the Co-op ai is stupid but they're accurate with their weapons. sometimes i would go thru a door and they're blocking my path.

I wasnt trying to be funny in my first paragraph I was trying to point out how big game companies have destroyed successful franchizes by "re-inventing" and there only reason for doing this was to save money, not that the "fan-boys" will see this. The reason for using the Unreal engine was to be able to make it easy to throw out the same crap over and over again with the minimal of changes, hence why RB6 and GRAW are the same game, cost more to develop new and creative games. The P.E.C system wasnt worth a mention cause it is one of thoese "gimicks" to make people think they are getting a new game compared to what it really is, an Expansion pack. You shouldnt have to unlock weapons by getting exp points, you should be a fully equiped soldier. The majority of my experience on this was Co-op and its dreadful, the fact that my mate who I played with is awful didnt help matters.

Metal Gear isnt a tactical shooter
The AI have to be super accurate otherwise they would be truly useless.

I like rainbow six vegas 2 I recommend it to my friends, the only problem I had with it was:

Spas 12 Sniper... FFS they are shotguns wtf are the AI attaching f'n scopes on them!!!

Random spawner... come on I go through a door and 5 terroist appear out of the blue infront of me armed with spas 12's !!!!! FFS

Online is where the game really shines though I have to say.

Rainbow 6 Vegas was a terrific visceral thrill. Sure its not a tactical shooter in the accepted PC player sense, but for a console game, its pretty deep. The method of controlling the friendlies is massively improved over the previous game making tactical maneuvers and flanking quick and easy.

im not a fan boy but a realist, and there are some major areas that are weak about this game. The sound is APPALLING, the story cursory at best, the number of choices you have regarding an assault is pretty scant and usually as sleight as 'frag or smoke' a room. However, i had the most engrossing Coop story experience with a friend the day after we both bought the game and neither of us moved from the sofa for 7 hours straight. For that alone, the game is a winner.

One more comment: the camoflague is unlockable depending on the rank you have attained in the game, therefore making the multiplayer that bit more interesting when you see a pink camoflague'd figure appearing round the corner - you know he's more likely to surgically rearrange your characters features than the dude wearing black wandering across the game zone.

This game is a big disappointment for several reasons, the main being that it's essentially the same game with a few bandages and a sling for some of the broken gameplay that was in the last game.

Yes it uses the Unreal Engine, but why did they bother? look at what Epic did with, admittedly their engine, now look at how Vegas has turned out, it's almost as if they didn't even bother, it looks fairly nice but compared to the other Tom Clancy series' they are pretty poor.

The gameplay is quite repetetive, it's the same gameplay as the first with minor tweaks, and if this was the first game, i'd be ok with that but i'm already finding myself getting tired of it, like said before me, there's a limited way of going through levels which gets boring. I also hate the AI sometimes, I ask them to rappel down and one of them takes a nearby fast-rope, straight through a sky-light into the middle of a group of terrorists, then makes his way towards the rappel from inside the building, only to get destroyed by a SPAS12.

What I do like about this game is the new weapons and levelling system. That SR-25 Sniper Rifle makes a fun sound which is the sole reason I use it. The experience/levelling system is a nice touch, throwing a grenade into a room and seeing the "Kill Using Explosives" appear three times is a yes moment.

One last thing; terrorist hunt. Now I loved playing this in the first game even with it's problems, but in this game it seems to be worse. It's harder which is good, but they've seriously neglected the glaring problems with this game mode; spawning and that last terrorist that can never seem to be found.

The spawning is ridiculous, if there were 4 of us who were very tactically minded, the level would be cleared bit by bit, but that is impossible due to the fact that terrorists will spawn at the start of the level, midway through, where you thought you had cleared.

Irritating game!

I like the game...multiplayer is a lot of fun...single player wasn't a chore...and co-op was amusing with my friend that is new to fps console games :p all in all, i don't regret paying 60$ for what i consider a great game. As of late, though, i haven't been playing it a lot because of the new MLG playlist in H3...a lot of fun as well
