Raise the Roof in Midgar With Vinyl Fantasy 7

Did you ever wish that Nobuo Uematsu's legendary score for Final Fantasy VII [http://www.amazon.com/Final-Fantasy-VII-Playstation/dp/B00000JRSB/ref=sr_1_1?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1280173918&sr=1-1] had more phat rap beats mixed in? Well, Vinyl Fantasy 7 has you covered on that front, and it's awesome.

Have you ever gone back to replay Square-Enix's classic Final Fantasy VII, only to find something missing in even Nobuo Uematsu's much-lauded soundtrack? "Gee," you may say to yourself, "As awesome as 'One Winged Angel' and 'Still More Fighting' are, this soundtrack just needs something more... dope. More fly. More fresh."

As it turns out, the FF7 soundtrack may have just been missing some white-hot rhymes from Jay-Z, Outkast, and more. That deficiency in the 13-year-old score has thankfully now been corrected [http://teamteamwork.bandcamp.com/album/vinyl-fantasy-7] by Team Teamwork's new album, Vinyl Fantasy 7. The mixmasters at Team Teamwork have been hard at work mashing up modern-day rap hits with beloved MIDI-tastic FF7 tunes, and the end result is... actually pretty cool.

Oh sure, it's not quite as awesome as their earlier venture, The Ocarina of Rhyme [http://teamteamwork.bandcamp.com/album/the-ocarina-of-rhyme], but it's a solid effort nonetheless, and it's available for the low, low price of free. Yes, it's true that you can pay what you want, which means some of you will pony up the extra cash, but I have a hunch that most people won't.

Above, you can hear M.O.P.'s "Ante Up" mixed with the game's battle theme, but it's not my favorite song on the album. That honor, right now, seems to be a tie between "Ice Cream Paintjob" vs. "Gold Saucer" [http://teamteamwork.bandcamp.com/track/jay-z-lucifer-mako-reactor] won't get stuck in your head for the rest of the day.

What're your favorites?

That's actually pretty cool, only now it kinda sounds like the music from Afro Samurai...
[small]...that's not a bad thing, by the way...[/small]

Yeah, I don't like rap. I guess the upside is that gaming has become more mainstream.

KILL IT WITH FIRE! Seriously, this is orchestral music, don't stick frikking rappers over the top for the love of god. Now I must go listen to my black mages albums to recover from that.

Probably won't get this, though the superb pun does tempt me.
Ocarina of rhyme is fantastic [http://teamteamwork.bandcamp.com/track/slim-thug-mike-jones-still-tippin-great-fairys-fountain] in places though, it's worth checking out.

Yeah man. I mean, who can forget the neo-Baroque stylings of Costa Del Sol [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XyPH6Qlp-u0]!

It's not orchestral, it's MIDI :p

No no no no no no no no, no. Just... no.
My ears can't handle rap. Mixing that with Final Fantasy just ruins the whole magic for me.

Well you know what I mean, it is MIDI, but if a good majority of the tracks were actually being played it would be orchestral(Obviously not Costa de sol, although someone should so do a classical rendition of that :p).

Also as far as I'm aware the PS1 version had live renditions of the soundtrack, whereas the PC version got stuck with MIDI.

I've got the OST with the proper music, which as wikipedia states is "The soundtrack covers a wide variety of musical genres, including rock, techno, orchestral, and choral,[1] although the soundtrack as a whole is primarily orchestral." as opposed to the MIDI style, so I always imagine it as orchestral (where applicable)

Either way I still don't like it.
