what's your fact of the day, Escapists?
Did you know that the Velociraptors from Jurassic Park are actually [a href"http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deinonychus"]Deinonychus[/a] (Latin for "terrible claw")?

The real [a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Velociraptor"]velociraptor[/a], while similar in look to the Deinonychus, is only about the size of a turkey, and feathered. It was decided during the movie's production for the the clever lizards to be called raptors because Deinonychus, aside from sounding less dynamic, was harder to spell and pronounce.

Liberal, Kansas, in the southwest part of the state, consistantly votes Republican. The only places in Kansas that consistantly vote Democrat are Lawrence and Kansas City.

Bananas emit anti-matter.

They contain an isotope of potassium that undergoes a form of beta decay which creates a positron, otherwise known as an anti-electron.
then doesn't every Eukaryotic cell emit anti matter too?
because they all have a potassium pumps

Lye, a corrosive chemical made famous in Fight Club, is not only used to make soap, but also provides much of the color and flavor in foods like cola, olives, and soft pretzels.

The first TIE Fighter to get smashed by an asteroid in Empire Strikes Back has the pilot totally flies out of the cockpit into space all while catching fire.

Yes I discovered this not more than 2 minutes ago.

Berwick upon tweed, Englands northernmost town, is technically still at war with Russia. the town has changed hands, between England and Scotland, so many times it was regarded as a special, separate entity, and some proclamations referred to "England, Scotland and the town of Berwick-upon-Tweed". One such was the declaration of the Crimean War against Russia in 1853, which Queen Victoria supposedly signed as "Victoria, Queen of Great Britain, Ireland, Berwick-upon-Tweed and all British Dominions". However, when the Treaty of Paris (1856) was signed to conclude the war, "Berwick-upon-Tweed" was left out. This meant that, supposedly, one of Britain's smallest towns was officially at war with one of the world's largest powers ? and the conflict extended by the lack of a peace treaty for over a century.

Here's a fun one, what colour is the sun? If you said yellow you just failed. Think of what happens to something when it becomes really, really, REALLY hot. It becomes white right? That's where the expression 'white hot' comes from.

Well the sun is so hot it fits that description perfectly, it's actually a giant white ball of flame. We only see it as yellow due to the influence of our atmosphere.
partly right
it also has to do with cones in our eyes. We do not detect the entire spectrum of light evenly so we don't often see the true color of bright objects.

I'm not sure. It's a specific isotope of potassium but I forget what number it is.

It was recently discovered that the town of Doncaster is technically part of Scotland as a result of a 900-year-old administrative error.
