I listen to music that focuses more around instruments. Often classical, jazz, and even songs sung in another language, so as far as lyrics go, they aren't that much of a priority for me.
Rap is all focussed around lyrics, and while I understand that, I don't enjoy it.
Not many people can mention Tom Waits, NoMeansNo, and DK in the same sentence, and MEAN IT.
Back on-topic, I've gone and watched the 'Rap Parodies' "I'm on a boat", and "I'm da Boss". It's depressingly similar to the rest of the currently mainstream hip-hop flotsam, except with slightly fewer actual bitches. Except possibly the yo-yo's singing/rapping/whatever-they-call-those-noises. And it's ALMOST less appealing than REAL RAP/Hip-Hop.
I don't deserve a cookie for speaking the truth, but thank you anyway. It's always great to see someone with some taste in music, especially if they like NoMeansNo.
I approve of most non-sell-out punk music; that's why I'm kinda depressed about SNFU. The bassist, Rob Johnson, used to be my baby-sitter (waaaaay back when), and I dig the older stuff, but the last few tours it's basically been "We're broke, we have mortgages and kids, SO HERE'S ANOTHER REUNION TOUR!"
Whereas, much of what I see in the rap/urban/hip-hop industry is similar: so-and-so makes it big, does an album about 'givin' back to tha streets, yo!', and then does videos showing how he's living large. At least when MC Hammer or Montel Jordan did a song about living in the hood, it sounded like they really did, and they actually DID try to give back... at least, when the media was watching.
I hate rap coz it SUCKS. The rap I hate is the crappy American rap witha rtists like Eminem, Fifty Cent and all those other fags that all have similar names. For some reason I dont mind the older 80's and 90's rap though, it's kinda cool.
The rap that I listen to is Australian Hip Hop. Artisits like Hilltop Hoods and Drapht. I think it's the subject matter of the two styles.
