Rapture Delayed

The Bioshock movie has been delayed following concerns about the budget.

Universal Pictures has delayed the start of filming on the Bioshock movie on hold, after balking at the proposed $160 million budget. The movie was due to begin shooting in Los Angeles, but the high costs involved have lead to the studio considering more affordable alternatives such as London. Director Gore Verbinski is currently in talks with Universal trying to get the budget to a more reasonable figure.

Verbinski, who turned down the opportunity to direct the fourth installment of Pirates of the Carribean to direct Bioshock, said: "We were asked by Universal to move the film outside the U.S. to take advantage of a tax credit. We are evaluating whether this is something we want to do. In the meantime, the film is in a holding pattern."

According to both Verbinski and sources at the studio, both parties are determined that the film will not become another Halo, which was cancelled by Universal and Fox over budgetary concerns, and sources at Universal are pointing out that this situation is no different than the delays in Ridley Scott's new Robin Hood movie, which began filming after being delayed by money negotiations.

$160million? Im not surprised they are hesitant about throwing that much money at a film that has no guarantee of any success

Get Uwe Boll involved. Sure, it'll be crap but at least he'll get it done on the cheap. It's not like the movie is going to be any good anyway, these type of things never are.

Yeah Riddick is the only decent movie game I can think of. But then its really its own story set in the Riddick world, rather than a straight adaptation from movie to game.

Just how much is this tax credit anyways. Do they do it off a percentage of the movies budget or what. And once again british people taking away what makes America great big budget terrible video game based movies, God. Acually i hope the movie rocks and i don't care were they make it at, because Bioshock would make an incredible movie.

Good idea!

They haven't been good yet, so why even try making it good? Instead we'll just make sure of that it's ass!
Yes! That's the right attitude!

I reckon Uwe Boll got his job because executives at film studios were getting sick of whiny competer game fanboys harrassing them constantly "please make a movie out of [insert your favourite game here]". I can almost picture the phone conversation:

Hollwood Executive: "Look, I'm getting 200 emails a day asking me to make a movie out of some stinking video game I never even heard of... Bio-shot or something... whatever, I don't have time for this crap, just make something to get them off my backs, will ya?"
Use Boll: "Of course. I will do it, it will be the best film ever made. Because I am the master. What is the story?"
HE: "Some guy is trapped in this underwater city, where there are zombies and they all read Ayn Rand, and... hell, I can't remember the rest, just make it up as you go. Whatever you want, it doesn't matter, gamers will watch anything. I've got too many real projects on the go to even think about this. If you do it, that means my studio won't have to, and my answering machine will stop getting clogged."
UB: "That is easy. I make that for five million, I have it done in six weeks."
HE: "Good work. I love having you around, Uwe."

The Spider-Man 2 game was awesome, so was The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction.

Tomb Raider and Resident Evil were decent movies, and I hear Hitman was too.

Hulk: Ultimate Destruction isn't a movie licensed game though. It's seperately developed from the original comics.

Am I the only one who's got mixed emotions about a Bioshock film? As much as I love the game, VG films do not have that great a track record.

If the movie is about Rapture before the fall then I could see it being interesting. If they try to do something else, like some kind of rage zombie:esque thing it will be a bag of poo. I know it's sometimes enjoyable to watch worthless crap, like Michael Bay-movies, but I think I'm right in assuming that's not what we want from BioShock.

Personally I find that Silent Hill stands out for me as Game -> Movie adaptation. Yes, it horribly merged the first three games, changed the plot in places and had scenes featuring Sean Bean doing nothing, but I got lucky: I knew ahead of time that Bean was a late addition, because the writers realised their script had no male characters. It'd have been fine without him, so I blanked those scenes, and was left with a damn good horror movie that reflected the fucked-up state of Silent Hill really well.

Resident Evil is also pretty good for a zombie-action film, and Tomb Raider... been too long since I last saw it, so I can't comment. Not all game<->movie crosses suck, they just haven't reached their potential yet.

I think a BioShock movie about the fall of Rapture would be a good film. All they would need is the writers who wrote the script for the game to do the movie script. Get a decent cast with a good director and you got the possibility for a good VG film.

Maybe Hollywood has learned. They don't want a big budget 'cause they think the film will do bad in the box office.

If they would JUST, JUST set the Bioshock movie in the BIOSHOCK universe and not really follow the game's story then that movie COULD potentially be good.

Yeah I'm really interested to see how they do this, it could definitely turn out really good. I just think it would probably better with American accents, because that's how everyone talked in the game if I remember right. I hope it gets moving soon though.
