Anytime I see anybody put up any question/offer/group find about anything in WoW, usually I rarely see anyone answer. I'd rather they say no 'I can't help, sorry' than just not answer. And yet, HUGE conversations go on about literally nothing, like Chuck Norris or out of game stuff.

Why do you think this is, Escapists?

Because people enjoy their conversations and don't want to stop them to help someone

Whenever I created a character in WoW, the very first thing I always did was /leave general and trade chats. I also avoided staying in a city for too long so as not to hear the /yells.

It's probably because people will whisper them their answers, or that's at least what I do when I see someone asking a question in general chat.

It's just fun to annoy people, even more so with the extremely large degree of anonymity the internet confers upon its users.

i stood there amongst a whole bunch of random people and said to one them:

"can i have some free stuff please?"

i didnt expect an answer. they usually walk off or say no or even call me a noob. but this guy, an Orc warrior in the 70's said:

"sure, is gold alright? here, have one thousand."

Result! i couldnt believe my eyes or my luck. what an awesome guy : )

I usually whisper my answer to people unless I think it might be something a lot of people wouldn't know.

I can't help, sorry

So how about that Chuck Norris?

Ot: Because answering someones question would be nice. And if their is one thing I know about people online...(except for 2 select forums)

Welcome to the internet?

Seriously, it's not just in WoW. In almost every single game, people do this. I try to help every single person I can, because it's good to have at least a couple of friendly people on the internet who aren't trying to find children to hunt down.

I don't play WoW, or any other MMO at the moment, but when I do I usually try to spruce up the chat. Like the one time I played Runescape (yes, the one time only... that is one day of gaming I can never get back) I got kind of sick of everyone yelling about what they are selling or looking for. So I said I had found a rare dragon egg, and would sell it to the highest bidder. Then I hightailed it out of there. One guy actually followed me, so I pretended to have problem with the chat, then log off. Poor guy probably believed me...

What?
>_>

Oh, and I think people should reply so everyone can see it. Might be someone else nearby who has the exact same question.

Wow..... that's awesome......

It reminds of the one time when I used to play Runescape and I found 173 yew long bows (very expensive) and 100k gold on the ground. I was in awe.

i used to play runescape too. but that never happens much. I went scrounging on warcraft since, but nobody has ever been so generous as that orc dude... wish i could remember his name

Well, I normally leave the chats to the flaming and idiotic debates, and just ask my guildmates for help. They are fairly experienced, really friendly, and know a lot about the game.

This, precisely.
The only time I've ever seen somebody literally stop a chat is when someone who has lesser.. I don't know, anything than them, and they just need to gloat.
It's human nature... I think..

Unless it is some very strange question that most people will not be able to answer you are almost always better off whispering. If it is a newbie question it is more friendly to do so, allows them to whisper you back follow up questions, and keeps the general chat free of such questions that will only provoke "leet" players into flaming. That and you might actually save the guy offering 25g for a portal out of Dalaran some gold and embarrasment.

Once, on a private server, I was in an hour and a half debate with someone about how I'm a terrible person for not donating my money to African children. It was actually, very intellectual. I find these servers to be more mature, because younger people normally don't use them.

i used to wait for someone to ask for g, then open the trade window, put about 5000 g in the trade box, and walk away.

they've sat there crying with their "accept trade" button clicked for hours until i came back and logged off

this i just like to link in wow threads http://ganked.ytmnd.com/
