Raves

Recently, I've become completely fascinated by the whole "Rave Scene". I always loved electronica music and the like, liked the idea/culture/style behind the idea of a rave, especially some of the outfits and dances.

I found out there's about 30 different styles of music, different types of Rave, styles of dancing, etc. and wanted to add some good bands/DJ's to my repertoire.

What's your best Raver music?



also, where on earth is the Raver scene freaking hiding? It a subculture, yeah, but how on earth do you get involved if you can't find the events! Where do you go to see a real rave in action?

EDIT: Anyone wanna tell me I haven't missed the boat yet and Rave is not dead and gone? Thats what I'm hearing. Also, I was hoping for musical suggestions, but discussion thread is never bad.

They still have raves? It has been about ten years since I went to a real one.

Right now I still love electronica and will gladly go to see stuff like Flying Lotus or Swedish House Mafia, but they are far from the raves in warehouses or fields in the middle of nowhere.

Why is it hidden? I will go with drugs. Drugs are part of a real rave, I personally wasn't into them, never tasted em and don't recommend its use, but they are an integral part of it.

Check record stores (assuming you can find one) or see if there's a 'glow shop' near your area. They'll have fliers for nearby events. The club scene in some areas is a good way to meet the people who would be in the know.

Best rave scenes are in Cali, Florida, and Colorado. If you're not in those places, you'll still find events, but they'll be nowhere the spectacles you can sometimes see in these places.

I'm a sucker for good ol' fashioned hardstyle-house and DnB/jungle. They're not as strong on the scene as they used to be, but damn that's the energy needed to go all night long.

Most events tend to be quite small anymore, and the police presence at any really large commercial "massives" is so intense as to detract quite heavily from the experience. The rave scene ain't what it used to be. The fact that there's events banning glow and lights these days just offends me to the core. Just because I like to glove for people doesn't mean I'm on drugs (can't speak for the ones staring at me, however). I just have a strong affinity for flashy shiny things and gloving or poi in most public places gets you strange looks. And I do like dressing up like a psychedelic christmas tree from time to time!

But, really, the days of real raves is over. It's sad, but the truth.

Actually, it's not possessive now either. That would simply be Raves (and gibberish); same as plural. Rave's means "Rave is". Behold my even greater grammar nazi skills.

I love any sort fo electronica, but im mainly into the harder stuff such as gabba/speed/terror etc.

Living in Holland is perfect for it. We got atleast 5 major hardstyle festivals a year. Probably more but I cant remember all of them.

Been to a Dubstep/DnB/Hardcore rave earlier this year. And yea it was pretty drug filled. (Aside from the marjiuana) but I didnt mind. The music was great and I had a great time.

There are still "Raves" in my area, but they don't really touch the underground communal events they once were. I thought Raves were also meant to be somewhat exclusive events, requiring you to know the right people to even be aware of it's existence. You would be surprised how many times Raves are somewhat advertised in my area.

Actually going to one of these Raves is not very impressive either. As far as drugs go, it's not really any different from finding the right people at a regular club. Sometimes the music itself is not suited for dancing all night to. It makes me wonder if there are any real Raves left anymore. Maybe it's just the events I experienced? I don't know for sure, but it seems to be widely accepted that ideal Raves are dead and gone.

There are, there are still raves that go on all weekend on deserted airfields, old industrial estates and just plain old fields. They just tend to be special events around the start of summer, christmas or the new year the rest of the time it's more likely to be smaller parties of 4-5 systems. Europe is the best place for full on technivals though, they have more space, especially the French/Spanish Border.

Well, that gives me hope.

May have to plan another European vacation sometime soon. Would be nice to experience a proper Rave at least one more time.

As someone from Michigan I would guess the best Raves are in Warmer Climates. I'm guess the West Coast has them all year, and I would bet NYC/Chicago are the only sources for Raves in the Midwest/NorthEast. That's for big parties though. For smaller parties I know some Frat Houses have small scale raves, and if you're into Paint Parties (similar to Raves I guess) there's this thing called DayGlow that hosts parties across the country. Otherwise just hit up old record stores and stuff like that and ask around. They've got to be somewhere in the US

Last rave I went to was in 97.

Thought that had died out years ago.
