Do ya'll agree with all these "Re-Boots" or "Re-Imaginings"? Like how did you feel when you saw that first Devil May Cry trailer or saw the new Lara Croft on the cover of Game Informer.
Just in case you're stupid and don't know what a re-boot is all ready, I'll provided a list of some recent "Re-Boots"

Devil May Cry (DmC)
Tomb Raider
Bionic Commando
Goldeneye 007
Golden Axe: Beast Rider
Pac-Man Chanpionship Edition
Sonic 4: Episode 1

In regards to DMC, I think Dante's character design is too iconic to change like that and still expect to be taken seriously. I mean seriously, it's not Dante without white hair. Seriously, you guys. Seriously.

Instead of rebooting the character, they should just rebooted the game design and fix the problems that 4 had, i.e. switching characters halfway through and making us play all the levels and bosses again.

I'll still check out the new DMC, but i'll download the free demo.

Agreed, I guess Capcom just doesn't listen to their community.

Well I haven't seen anything about those reboots except for Devil May Cry, and that is just downright stupid, especially since the head guy on the team the egotistical and attention whore that he is, put his face on Dante.

As for reboots I have played as of late, Castlvania: Lords of Shadow was a reboot, and it was awesome.

Bionic Commando is an interesting addition to this list because it got both a reboot and a remake. And from what info I can gather, the remake (basically the original game upgraded) did much better than the 3D reboot (or at least it did in terms of first month sales).

I personally like the new look of Dante in the new Devil May Cry much more than than in the past games. Mind you, I still think he looks like a tool, but it's indeed an upgrade compared to the poo stain that is Dante. Was DMC created by the brain of a ten year old girl? I think this is the only way Dante might be considered "super cute and dreamy" or "soooooo badass". No, little Rebecca, Dante looks like an albino in drag. With contact lenses. At a fetish show. For the blind.

Must I say this again. The devil may cry game is an ORIGIN not a RE-BOOT. Seriously, I hate it when people mix up their facts. X_X

Rebooting isn't bad, per se, but it always seems to happen when an IP has jumped the shark, and the developers think they have to rebuild the IP, instead of producing a new one.

They're not all bad, as sometimes it can lend a new look to the universe, or expand on it, but every time I see one of these come out, I think to myself, why couldn't we just get a brand new IP?

Oh right, the risk of something new vs a rebooted familiar name.

First off, Goldeneye 007 was, in no way, a reboot. There were only two games before it. It was a remake of the first.

Second:

It has been far too long :(

Third: I think certain ones don't work and shouldn't happen, certain ones do work but aren't exactly necessary, and others are sometimes even called for. Tomb Raider? After all the crap? A reboot is called for. I just hope it's done right.

I don't really have an opinion on reboots. If they make the games better, congrats well done, if they make a mess, then shame on you for your hubris. I think our society puts the idea of innovation on a pedestal a bit too often and dismisses re-imagining a bit too quick.

How is Pac-Man Championship a reboot? It's a different play mode, it's not like they redesigned the character, changed the rules of the game or made it a completely different genre.

Devil May Cry 5 is going to be a prequel to the series, so a prequel to the already established prequel of DMC3.
It is perfectly understandable why they changed Dante, since it is going to take place before he established the detective service and went through the tower.

From what I understand, the new Mortal Kombat is more of an alternate universe story, like MK Vs. DC (but we don't have to talk about that). In this new story, when Raiden was about to be slain by Shao Khan in "Armageddon" (the one before the DC one), he sent a message to the past version of himself from the first game, warning him of the future. This new Raiden will use this knowledge to change Earthrealm's fate, thus creating an alternate universe in which Armageddon has been prevented and Fatalities are easier to activate (god willing).

Also, regarding the new DmC, they'll probably just reveal that this is actually a prequel, and this new, black-haired Dante is actually the younger version of the white-haired Dante we all know and love.

Mmm, new Lara.
What? She's cute. Dirt and all.

Is Sonic 4 a reboot?
As far as I'm aware they're still making terrible 3D games, and Sonic 4 still annoyed a lot of the fans by having broken physics.

LoL. I had originally thought the exact same thing when I read this thread. Look a cookie! "Groovy!"

OT: I'm surprised the Prince of Persia series was left off of the list of infamous re-boots. I am not totally against re-boots but I refuse to play the new Goldeneye. Not only does the original hold special memories but I can't suspend disbelief when they replaced the Bond. Daniel Craig was not in the movie Goldeneye (which let's face it was the impetus for the original N64 game) and I don't see how replacing Pierce Bronsnan for him makes the game any better.

I am sure it is a good game. "A rose by any other name." Etc. However, if they wanted a Daniel Craig game they should have used a setting/story/title in keeping with his portrayal of Bond. If they wanted a remake of Goldeneye then they shouldn?t change the main character from that setting/story/title. Just my .02.

Whether it's jumped the shark or not, rebooting tends to come at a point when new ideas would be best. Maybe not even a new franchise, but actually making meaningful changes to the franchise in question, rather than trying to make Dante gritty or whatever.

There's little in the gaming world that needs a reboot, more importantly. The biggest legit reason to reboot a franchise is the need to make it more contemporary. Take the latest Batman movie franchise, for example. That also had the benefit of further distancing itself from the franchise that offered us Batman and Robin, but that's another story.

there are few franchises in gaming that have the kind of history that goes along with decades or even centuries (Say, for example, Robin Hood) of telling and retelling. The whole genre is still about 30 years old, and few enduring characters are that old. Many of those don't need re-imagining. Mario really doesn't need to be rebooted. Link and company already sort of get a reimagining with every new title. Samus Aran probably shouldn't have been touched.

Guys like Dante haven't got the history or the sort of generational difference to really mandate something new, and that sort of attempt to contemporise tends to cheapen a product more than not.

This got posted while I was posting, and looking at videos of Sonic 4 to see if it was relevant to my train of thought....

There was going to be a series of Reboot films, though Wikipedia says the project may be abandoned now. :(
