Then again it is a Spielberg film, and I'm convinced he doesn't understand the culture/s the book comments on, so won't be able to make much of a commentary on anything.

You may not be wrong; but I'd find that ultimately funny, as he was a noticeable contributor to the 80's culture: participated in creating two Indiana Jones movies, directed E.T., produced and co-writed Poltergeist and The Goonies.
