Suddenly, I'm reminded of Metal Gear Solid 2's convoluted ending:

Bullshit. Bullshit. Bullshit. There are plenty of ways to gauge customer reaction to a stupid idea, and this is not one of them (at least not a good way at any rate)

Maybe they went a bit too far. But at least they retracted their mistake.
