Someone phoned-in a bomb threat at my junior college today. Here's the press release.
--"COS Visalia campus experiences emergency-response closure, reopens after less than two hours.
College of the Sequoias received a non-specific bomb threat at around 11 a.m. today. All buildings on the campus were evacuated. COS police were assisted by the Visalia police and fire departments and the Farmersville Police Department. The entire campus and all buildings were checked with the help of a bomb-sniffing dog provided by the FPD. Nothing suspicious was found. COS reopened for classes and business shortly before 1 p.m."--
No actual danger. Not surprising.
There are two scenarios that could've lead to this.
Scenario One: Some douchebag thought it would be a good idea make a threat that the authorities HAVE to take seriously, and would interfere with the education of every student that had a class during those two hours.
Granted, it's only one day (less than that, really), but the sheer audacity of using the threat of violence to miss class, or just to get off on, annoys me greatly. Because harming other people's efforts at higher education (even if it's only a little), for your own selfish gain, is douchebaggery of the highest order.
Scenario Two: Someone overheard something, or was told something, and called in with an earnest warning.
I hope what happened today was similar to the latter scenario. The caller is unnamed and thus remains anonymous, so I doubt their motives will ever come to light. At least in this case, even though people missed their classes, the intent behind it was sincere.
And you can't look at this with the bias of hindsight. Because then you could say, "well, the outcome was the same, so what does intent matter?"
It matters because there's a difference between A) warning people about something you believe has potential to hurt someone, and B) not wanting to attend class (or some other selfish reason), so you employ the threat of violence to cause mayhem and fear in order to skip it/ feel powerful and jerk off.
Team-killing in a game is annoying for sure, but not harmful.
Do any of you have stories about someone being a douchebag solely for the sake of being a douchebag? Or who placed their selfishness before the well-being of others?
