One of the best RTS games ever is an Eidos game called Metal Fatigue. Get it, you wont be dissapointed.

Here you can even download it at this URL.

Age of Empires... 3? Why the hell? Pick up 1 and 2, and then get Age of Mythology.
I don't think I really need to explain Starcraft, either.

Stay far away from anything with a console port (excluding Starcraft 64, that was back when they didn't know any better).

Second on the Sins. Nothing says RTS like a good twelve hour 50 planet free for all.
Holy shit... 12 hours?!?!?!? Why?!?
I know someone who had a 14 hour Free For All on Starcraft once. I'm fairly certain they modified the resource count on the map, and that was just one round, on one map. I called him crazy. Most rounds last from 30 minutes to an hour, though.

Ahem, I too will recommend Warhammer 40k: Dawn of War and its expansions. Expect Soulstorm, how I ever played it through twice, I'll never know. Avoid that like the plague!

Also, Warcraft 3+expansion are quite enjoyable, with some characters and quotes I'll never forget (work, work). Though I used cheats in it a lot for shits ang giggles, so to speak. A ridiculous rush of maxed out, endless tides of ghouls is most amusing.

Same with Starcraft.

Command & Conquer Generals (and the expansion Zero hour) is seriously the most fun RTS game I've ever played (graphics aren't too shabby for 2003 either). After that comes Warcraft 3 (and its expansion Frozen Throne) which has such a unique and intriguing story, and the campaign missions are so fun!
I agree

If you're willing to give them a try you could also play some city-builders. Try Ceaser three.

Edit: In fact I'm gonna go play it right now.
I love city builders, but I didn't know if I should include them as an RTS or not. I have all the SimCity's, they are fun.

I have the older AOE games I just play them so much, but it is one of the best RTS's I've played.

Total Annihilation, Supreme Commander, Starcraft, Warcraft III, Dawn of War 1, Battle for Middle Earth, World in Conflict. Just for starters. Don't forget the C&C games.
Total War games tower above the rest.

Warcraft III is, of course, pretty awesome.
Seconded. WC3 is great, and it's world edditor allows for countless mods, of which some are very good.
It's also kinda old which means it's cheaper than a nympho crack whore

In the summer drought of games and with me getting very tired of Civilization 4, Age Of Empires III, and Stronghold 2 I find myself seriously strapped in the RTS category.

So I guess what I asking is, are there any RTS games you recommend? (Preferably PC, I like the KB+Mouse combo for RTS. It just feels right.)

and

What are some of your favorite older ones? Recommendations

Edit: I think a lot of people got disappointed when the opened up my thread.
IF YOU WANT ONE OF THE BEST RTS GAMES EVER GET ANY OF THE LATEST TOTAL WAR GAMES
EITHER
ROME: TOTAL WAR
MEDIEVAL 2: TOTAL WAR
OR
EMPIRE: TOTAL WAR.
THEY GIVE YOU MASSIVE WORLD MAPS FROM ROMAN TIMES, MEDIEVAL TIMES, AND THE AGE OF THE BRITISH EMPIRE TIME. CONTROL VAST ARMYS OF THOUDANDS AND TAKE IN THE AMAZING GRAPHICS OF FIGHTING.
PERSONALLY I WOULD GO FOR THE MEDIVAL 2 GAME. ONCE YOU GET IT YOU'LL WONDER HOW YOU'D LIVED WITHOUT IT. I USED TO GT UP AT 6 IN THE MORNING JUST TO PLAY ON IT. ALARM SET AND EVERYTHING.

Company of Heroes isn't just one of the best RTS I've ever played but its presentation really makes it the most convincing depiction of WW2 I've seen in the hundreds of WW2 games out there...

You will enjoy this game.

Another one that I sort of recommend is Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds. At its core, it's basically just a mod on Age of Empires 2, but I still thought it was pretty fun back in the day.
WOW! I thought I was the only person who cared about that game. Its aoe II on steroids.

As for the best old rts, My vote is on Rise of Nations, it appeared just before graphics superceded gameplay as a priority, without looking like shit.

I also have a soft spot for Empire Earth, Future Robots all the way

Stronghold Crusader.

The best game in the stronghold series, if you ask me.
