Not trying to sound douche-y but what specifically would you have done differently? I don't have a problem with linearity, but if you're going to make a sand-box game then structure your story to take advantage of that. Instead, Red Dead takes the Call of Duty approach of pairing you with one or more team mates and having them lead you by the nose through highly scripted shooting galleries.
Also, just my opinion and I know I'm not going to change your mind, but I loved the story, I'm a huge fan of westerns and to me the story rang true.
OT: When I questioned how the hell transporters are supposed to work. I just ignore it now but if I think about it....
