Really Anxious about University

I'm in my final stages of planning: Looking for courses etc and now my lecturer has informed me that the "Welsh Bacc" course(150 equiv) has been cancelled /replaced with a lesser and that I am frozen at around 200 UCAS points for my two year practical course.

Really anxious now about applying to GOOD universities which usually want more than this. Lecturers not being helpful and I have to apply by monday.

Relax. It's just like highschool, seeing as many people in your classes are going to be your age as well as your level of unknowledgability regarding being at University.

I wouldn't worry. Two things can/will happen.

A) You get in. Nothing changes, everything's gravy.
B) You don't get in. You spend a gap year making up extra points, doing work (experience), fapping expanding your cultural surroundings etc. until you reapply next year and get in with a wider view on life.

Sure, it means you're joining Uni a year later, but I don't see it as that big of a deal. I took a gap year and it was probably the best choice I could've made for my personal maturity.

Thanks for the advice I have found a mix of courses. I think I will apply to 1 really good Uni and 1 really low (just in case) and medium in between.

If he gets in a year late, he could end paying huge fees which should be coming in in 2012. I wouldn't worry about it too much though, get a good reference and personal statement and you'll be fine. They let absolute dildos into university so you'll be fine. I needed 300 points and only had 240. Whatever.

oh and you don't need to apply by monday. If you want to go to uni next september, you can apply independently of your current institution right up until august. There's always clearing, they let people in that actually failed their a levels through clearing.

what uni's are you looking at?

I wouldn't worry a whole lot. It's not so much *where* you go to school that will stick with you, but the people you meet there.

As for courses, not quite sure what you're looking for. I know the university I'm at has a sort of "starter set" that it recommends first year students choose from - covers all the basic pre-req's for pretty much any major, but also encourages exposure to other disciplines.

Im assuming that nothing has changed in the 3 years since I applied it thats the case here's what you need to do.

Pick 1 or 3 good universities, these can be right up including places you didn't think you would get into before your points got frozen. These are you ideal choices. The right course, the right locations. You couldnt ask for more.

Next pick 1 or 3 (depending on if you picked 1, 2 or 3 good uni's) compromises. There are as the statment suggests, compromises. The course isnt "quite" what you want but the main elements are there and the location is still perfect. Or the location is a little suck but the course is still spot on.

Finally, pick 1 or 2 (again depending on how many you picked before) out and out bottom. Places that you KNOW you can get into unless everything really does go to shit in your exams. They are looking for D's across the board style. This doesnt necessarily have to be a bad uni, more often than not grade requirement are high because of quantity of applicants not becaue you actually need the grades, if this is the case for your course then some of the less main stream unis could have just as good departments but ask for far less grades wise (this is where visiting uni's is really telling, some of the better uni's departments are actually quite bad because all their funding goes to 1 or 2 pet departments but they still ask for high grades, all is not always as it seems). The grades are what you are really looking at here though, providing the course is in the same ball park and you could physically stand living there.

Remember though, that you DO have more time to pick! These 5 are only preliminary, and you'll get offers back. Many unis take students not grades, so going to the uni, meeting the staff and leaving an impression can make up for poor grades. If push comes to shove and you decide you no longer want ANY of them, you can decline all your offers and opt for clearing. I knew several people who did this and get in a place they are happy to be. If you know where you want to go in this instance, contact the uni before clearing start, arrange some interviews and you could well get a letter on results day offering you a place, also not unheard of.

When the option for your 2 come in, make sure youve done your reading! Some unis, I believe Bristol is one (don't hold me to it CHECK!), out and out reject you if you dont put them first! In this case if your not sold on Bristol and don't want it first there is no point in picking it as your second. Keep this in mind. If you are unsure if they do this ring the admin department at the uni, they are pretty open about it. If you cant get a straight answer, ring the uni's student union and ask them! They will be straight with you, and if they dont know will probably find out for you. They pull a lot more weight than you do.

Generally in this final stage, your first choice should be the creme da la creme, unless they offer triple A and you know youll get CCC only if your lucky, and a backup. When picking your here, be realistic, lying to yourself here about the grades you will get can only hurt you!

If you want to know how the uni will value your course, ring the department admin. This is what they are here for. Just because some places rank your course down now doesnt mean other will!

Be honest to yourself. Pick a broad spread of unis with a variety of asking grades. Keep your options open for as long as possible. The moment you get those offers, start digging for information and make an informed choice.

Hope this helps ;)

GL!

Thanks especially for the longer posts. It seems university isn't nearly as hard to get into as colleges make out(this was the same scaremongering at school about college funnily enough)

For my two year course (media) I have mainly merits which actually equals at about 240 seemingly ...finding some good production courses currently with either levels I can meet or just above and making my choices on Sunday evening (lecturer is sending off my stuff)

Thanks for all your help I have calmed down now :)

Edit: for those who wanted to know I'm going to do production courses at maybe:

1) Leeds Met
2) Marjon Plymouth
3)Bucks
4)Bournemouth -Salisbury
5) Notrthhampton

Hey, I'm applying there too! Only I plan to do psychology and criminology or possible criminological psychology. They are actually different courses.

I don't seem that anxious about Uni, I have two siblings who have either done or are doing degrees so I figured if they can do it then so can I.

Also going to some of the open days helped a lot, you can learn more about the course you want to do and actually meet the lecturers.
For example I went to a Chichester open day and found it was not the place I would want to go to, the course seemed kind of suckish, I didn't really like the campus much, the lecturer I got to meet was barely understandable and her voice grated on my nerves.
Worst of all, there is absolutely no night life in the area.

I'm kidding.
Well, I'm not kidding about the 'no night life' but I am about it being the worst thing. My point remains, open days can help a lot.

I also went to Bucks open day. That was a lot better in every way.

You're welcome, I'm happy to help.
I feel you pain with UCAS but I finally got mine done yesterday! I found the personal statement part such a pain. I got so many emails telling me to do some work on it and it's such a relief now. The waiting for it to get processed then offers to come in will kill me. I hate waiting. It's like after you've done an exam and want the results.
I also can empathise with your want to get away from home, I can't wait to get way from home and my parents, and especially the chavvy people who live in my area.
Bucks seems like a nice place, it's near the center of High Wycombe (seriously, walk under one road and you're there) the campus is small so you don't have to trek between classes and there are some good pubs in the area as well as the standard bowling/cinema and shopping center (which is quite big).

The best part, I can actually realistically get in to Bucks. Both courses there are points based and with the amount of subjects I've done, even just to AS I am pretty much there.

Glad to hear it! Unless I have a huge crisis I'm now pretty much set on doing the courses I want. Everything is working out just before my Xmas holiday to Vietnam, I'd like to thank you for your time and would like to know in the near future if you do get into Bucks!

Thanks man, I was looking for a thread about this sort of thing, I'm anxious about university too. But yeah,I've thought about grade 13(We call it that in my country, never checked to see which country you were from) the 13th year used to be mandatory and every teacher I've spoken to preferred it.

But I guess reading it so plainly helps alleviate some of the stress. If I don't get in... just try a year later.

Thanks again.
