No. TECHNICALLY freedom of speech does not cover pronunciation.presidentjlh said:Ah, Joliet.NekoiHiokans said:I have one not to far from my house, where if you pronounce the name of the city wrong you can be fined and/or thrown in jail. I mention this because someone was arrested for this the other day.
Isn't that law unconstitutional, because technically you're abridging someone's right to say something in the way they'd like to.

Cruel and unusual punishment is torture and such things. Imprisonment is neither cruel, nor unusual. stop trying lolpresidentjlh said:Fair enough.8-Bit_Jack said:No. TECHNICALLY freedom of speech does not cover pronunciation.presidentjlh said:Ah, Joliet.NekoiHiokans said:I have one not to far from my house, where if you pronounce the name of the city wrong you can be fined and/or thrown in jail. But what about the 8th amendment: Cruel and unusual punishment. I think jailtime for mispronouncing a city's name falls under that amendment because it is such a harsh punishment for what is really a non-crime.

Then I say that sounds like treason, and you should be hanged. Because the punishment for treason is still a hanging. How about I say that the law should be repealed because it's idiotic and has no basis in sanity?

OT : Here in Iceland we probably have many silly laws that no one knows about and aren't enforced, but I do remember that we used to have a law (revoked in 1993) that if you killed a Turk you could not be prosecuted (sorry, don't know the proper way to say that in English).
There was a place that would always get attacked by the Welsh and its still legal to kill a Welshman on sight. So you wont get charged with murder, just man-slaughter..killgannon said:I'm not sure if it's still a law or not but 6 years ago when I was studying law in college my lecturer told us that it's legal to shoot a welshman with a crossbow providing he is standing within the boundaries of a particular castle, I think it's in Cornwall but I may be mistaken.

Yeah unfortunately the new anti blasphemy laws came into effect on Jan 1(fuck you Dermot Ahern).Anyone found guilty can be fined up to ?25,000.Problem is the wording is quite vague,Demented Teddy said:I'm sure there's a law in Ireland that says you can get fined for saying anything sacrilegious.
There is. We have a Blasphemy Law. It's wonderful... Everyone else in Europe's abolished them, and we reinstate ours.Demented Teddy said:I'm sure there's a law in Ireland that says you can get fined for saying anything sacrilegious.
