This is very weird, I registered at Gamesamba for a game called Realm Online, but the launcher is trying to connect to something called Regnum Online from a company called NGD.

This is very shady.

What's going on here, Escapist?

This looks a localization of an old Asian MMO.

And I installed the PC version with Wine before noticing an OSX version. XD

So, how free is it? LotRO and DDO are calling themselves "F2P" now when it is hardly the case (extreme content limitations on free play) and a bunch of smaller MMOs which are free sell items for cash to such a degree that free players are left in the dust.

Realms Online is basically an updated version (new engine etc.) of an old game called Regnum Online which was available in the EU only and never got an English translation. Same developers. I think they're from Argentina.

Apparently the shop items are only cosmetics. But the appearance of a 2x exp item concerns me a little. I will probably give it a go in days to come.

You know, I gave this game a shot because The Escapist's background advertisements are what originally got me into Vindictus, which is a pretty good game. However, after playing it for about...oh a minute or so. I immediately quit, uninstalled and took my name off of GameSamba's e-mail list. That was just horrible. I'm going to strongly recommend you give this one a pass. I can usually see an MMO through for a little while (Hell I played Pirates of the Carribean: Online for like 2 hours), but this was just bad.

Is it weird that i tried searching "Realms Online" in Google and Youtube, but found no matches to this particular game?
EDIT: found it: http://realmsonline.gamesamba.com/
I'm probably just dumb.
The game is actually named "Regnum Online", it even says so in the "Realms Online" installer.
http://www.regnumonline.com.ar/index.php?l=1&skip=1

Its available in the US and other areas already, so its weird that another studio would be releasing the same game under a different name.
the plot thickens.
This type of mmo no longer excites me anyway.

I dunno, it kind of reminds me of the PVP in Shaiya which was the only good thing about that game. Or similar to Aion, if it was free.

I tried it out for a bit. The graphics and gameplay are lackluster. I've played worse free MMOs, but I've also played better.

This whole thing of the game actually being from a completely different company than the one Escapist have an offer for is weird.

Hence the extra stuff for Escapist members probably won't actually work.

Anyway it's put me off trying to make an account for NGD or Regnum Online. The game is now un-installed.

Regnum is the EU version of the same game, made by the same company, just using a different engine.

It have horrible controls and no way to do anything about it. If the controls were good I'd play it more but about about 20 minutes of playing I gave up and uninstalled it.

well... they say the cash shop items are "normalized" for pvp combat so you don't get any real advantage buying shop items. which is a good thing! (and, in theory, they have mac and linux clients, so that's pretty unique as well)

The only real F2P game I've found is Forsaken World, where you can get a few of the cash shop items through the auction house and get gold for that with selling stuff to other players. Grand Fantasia too. Not sure if you can do the same in RO.

Also, just a little note to put out there... the Escapist Exclusive Mount has a 30 day duration. so... it will disappear eventually.
