IDK why, but I'd certainly go with the Bastion! Maybe some platforming would do her good in her first steps (it still has a bunch of RPG stuff too!)
Trine would be fun too if you could coop, and amazingly, my GF just got to LOVE playing GTA, you may give it a try....

My girlfriend loves Portal 1 & 2. She also likes Ratchet and Clank to some extent.

My Girlfriend likes portal 2 and playing as the pyro on TF2. I've taken steps to preventing her becoming a valve fangirl, don't worry I got it covered.

Hmm... Before I really started pc gaming I used to be enjoy old-school point-and-click adventure games (King's Quest, etc). After that I just started borrowing games from my boyfriend (I was hooked on the Baldur's Gate series for a while)... I don't know, it's hard to know what kind of games to recommend without knowing a person. Probably best to trial-and-error until she finds out what kind of games she likes best.

Have a look at Dreamfall: The Longest Journey, a sequel to an older style adventure game but with much more lenient gameplay, and has a great story and female-centric characters. Only problem is it's a bit short at about 10 hours of gameplay.

Also chicks always love a Zelda game, but it doens't sound like you have a Wii.

Since she's a fan of Sims...

Dwarf Fortress?
Lol, while I approve of the suggestion because DF > Minecraft IMO it is a really hard game to get into due to the overly clumsy interface and Ascii graphics.

Might be worth trying an adventure game of some sort. Plenty to choose from ranging from simple point and click to first person stuff. Longest Journey was an instant hook for my wife. You then couldn't get her off the PC and she just devoured adventure games. Then she started playing Final Fantasy 10 then 7 and I could no longer game on the consoles :/

EDIT:OOps no not Longest Journey, the hook was Day Of The Tentacle, she used to play that once a year as she loved it so much.

Maybe try Black And White, or some other god game. I know it's old but the controls are intuitive, the gameplay is fun and it goes at whatever pace you want it to. Although, if I'm honest Black And White 2 was better as it introduced a lot more involved elements, but start her out on B&W 1 first and go from there. The good thing about it being old is it won't be hard to run and it'll be cheap as hell by now.

Sims 2, it's much better.

Theme Hospital, Theme Park World, Sim City.
My 3 favourite childhood games.

But anyways... sim(ulation) games are probably the easiest to get a grasp of pc-wise even though they are (imo) a dying genre nowdays.

But you can always look at popcap. My personal favourite of their games is peggle.

Team Fortess 2

- It's free
- It's easy to learn
- It's a good way to get into FPS's
- It's got hats
- It's free

And last but not least, if she has problems,
you just go ahead and pick a Medic and help her out.

I've been wondering the same thing with my girlfriend. Since her brother took her PC, she can't play Sims 3 anymore until they do something with some other computer in the house. We've been playing Pokemon Ruby on an emulator and finishing the game together (we got through Crystal before that). We've also go on Runescape every couple of months to troll...

I'm not sure what else we could play together besides Yahoo! pool and chess.

I know she likes racing games, but not much else. I told her that I'd buy a Wii if she did at some point. Being far away, online games and things like that are all we can play together.

Try looking up simulation games or games with simple controls.

Try out sites like Playfirst or Bigfishgames they do more simple laid back games that are often similar to sim games.

As for more console games rather than PC I'd suggest try things like:

Kingdom for Kelflings - Very sim-esque I think there' another one called world of kelflings too

The Undergarden - nice and relaxing and very basic controls and good tutorial

Stacking - Very fun little game and combat is very minor so can be good for neophytes

The Maw - It's a bit kiddy-looking but it's cute and fun

The Sly Cooper Series is a lot of fun too and again is easy to learn.

Paper Mario Thousand Year Door is great fun and very forgiving.

Ghost Trick is incredibly deep and there's no combat to learn and deal with.

The other stuff suggested sounds good too so I haven't bothered to repeat them. I tried to throw out random games as I don't know what she likes besides the sims and rift but found it confusing to learn (I did too)

ARMA 2, Falcon 4.0: Allied Force, DCS: A-10C Warthog or Grand Prix Legends would be some rather interesting choices.
You... Know of this game? This is the first time I've read "Falcon 4" outside of the flight simulator forums.

Maybe Saints Row 2? Or 3 sense it comes out very soon.

As a girl who until a couple of years ago pretty much only played the Sims, the first 'real' game i really got obsessed with was Oblivion, and from there i started playing more rpgs, like Morrowind, Fallout 3 and New Vegas (gotta love Bethesda!!) - also Bioware rpgs. However, i am a complete geek, so maybe your girl won't like those games as much as i did! I think some people also mentioned Minecraft - i think that also might be a good bet: if she likes the Sims games, they've got an element of creativity which i think she'll find in Minecraft as well.
