For a while now I've considered getting a tablet to basically see what the big deal is, and while I know about the iPad to a certain extent, I was looking for a good Tablet PC since I have an iPod. So without meaning to sound like a crotchety old woman, what is the general idea of what the machine does? More iPod/iPhone or more PC?

EDIT: I feel I should mention my attraction is the ability to do what I normally do on my laptop (i.e. internet, text documents, music and video] wherever, since I'm in college and I typically have wi-fi everywhere I go. It just seems a bit more convenient.

Soooo just because you want to see what the big deal is you want to spend hundreds of dollars/euros/local currency on a tablet computer? Good heavens you must have a crapload of disposable income.

Anyway, as far as I know tablet PC's are basically netbooks (those tiny laptops that were all the rage a year or 2 back) without a keyboard and a touchscreen instead. And with a way higher pricetag. They look cool and all, I mean they're basically Star Trek-style datapads, but I never saw a real use for them. I'd rather get a netbook.

iPads are giant iPod touches, and Tablet PCs... are, well, PCs with touch screens. Windows OSs for tablet PCs aren't really able to fully capture the possible uses of a touch screen interface yet, so what I can suggest is just getting a normal tablet. Monoprice [http://www.monoprice.com/products/subdepartment.asp?c_id=108&cp_id=10841] tablets are on par with any less than $200, and are a steal.

A notable difference between using a tablet PC and a PC with a tablet attached is that you aren't drawing on the screen itself. It may seem like it would be disorienting, but with the existence of cursors, you get used to it very quick.
