So I got about $30 in my steam wallet and am looking to buy some indie games during the big sale that's going on now, as Indie games become extremely cheap during sales like this. I'm also interested in smaller games AAA publishers release that are cheap like $15 or $20 at full price (like Rayman Origins). The only requirement is that they are on steam and they become cheap during big sales.

I'm open to most genres and would like to try new ones too, so just recommend your favorite indie games.

I like games that give you a range of tools and solutions to obstacles, like Gunpoint, Trine and Mark of the Ninja. I also like platformers that give you a sense of flow, stealth games, RPG, puzzle games and hack and slash.

The Indie games that I've played and enjoyed are:

-Trine 1 and 2
-Gunpoint
-Bastion
-Anomaly Warzone Earth
-Hotline Miami
-The Swapper
-Shadow Warrior (2013)
-Mark of the Ninja

Lots of good ones on there, my favorites so far:

Papers, Please
Among The Sleep
Five Nights At Freddy's 1 and 2
The Long Dark
The Vanishing of Ethan Carter
The Stanley Parable
The Forest
Dear Esther
Gone Home
Darkwood
Sunless Sea
Zeno Clash 1 & 2
Spin Tires (amazing water, mud, etc. physics)
Next Car Game: Wreckfest (do you like wreaking cars? amazing physics)
BeamNG.drive (Are you serious about liking to wreck cars? We can only hope GTA or some other game picks up this soft body physics engine)
Night Shift (bizarre, surreal story, with an amazing sound track by Dance With The Dead)
7 Days To Die (Got a lot of play time from what I thought would be just another tired zombie apocalypse game, was very surprised)

For multiplay
Primal Carnage
Dino D-Day
Chivalry
War of The Roses (Personally prefer Chivalry)

Those are just off the top of my head, also I have not bought a AAA game since Assassin's Creed 4.

Try Aquaria, amazing indie game. It's not really a platformer or puzzle game, but it has elements of both those and a full blown RPG. It's a beautiful side-scrolling game that does have the multiple paths approach you're looking for.

As well as some of the most haunting music in any game ever.

Can't think of much that wasn't already mentioned but Dust:An Elysian tail should be a good one to play

Definitely give This War of Mine a shot. There are games that can keep you up until 3am. Then there's something like This War of Mine, which will keep you up until 3am when you stopped playing at 10pm..

(I also recommend FTL, Wreckfest, Papers, Please, The Stanley Parable and Binding of Isaac, but they've been mentioned already.)

Oh, if you liked Anomaly Warzone Earth, then Anomaly 2 is worth a play as well.

If you are into 4X games Endless Legend is super good (it's also a featured deal currently at $17.50)

The people that made Bastion put out another game earlier this year called Transistor which is excellent (~$13).

The guy who did the narrative design for the Swapper worked on the Talos Principle which is also apparently very good (it's also quite expensive so it's probably now what you want to get right now).

It's not remotely indie but Saints Row 4 is on a pretty massive sale ($5 for the basic version, $7.50 for it + the DLC). It's an awesome game.

Spelunky is one of the best games ever (if tough procedural generated games are your thing) and it's $7.50.

Teleglitch is $3.24 and is also great (top down shooter rouge-like type thing).

Risk of Rain is another rather nice rougelike type game $6.69.

The fall is a cool adventure game thing about AIs ($4.99).

Volgarr the Viking is basically side scrolling Dark Souls and I love it ($7.50)

Neo Scavenger is $15 and one of the ugliest looking games in existence. It also does post apocalyptic survival better than just about anyone else, provided you can get past the ugly graphics and UI.

There is a ton of other good stuff out there as well, but I would be here all day if I kept listing them.

I will agree with all the games listed above and add The Fall for some adventure game love. The game plays very much like the old Flashback or Out of the World/Another World games.

Sanctum 1 and 2 are some of my favorite indie games ever. They are an amazing blend of FPS and Tower Defense, and they are 4 player co-op too.

Some good games listed here.

Allow me to add a little something more:
- Jazzpunk. Picture the game version of Naked Gun, with jokes coming left and right (mostly about spy flicks and geek culture), and no one bating an eye to say "this is funny, isn't it?" That game obliterates the fourth wall, but makes it with such confidence that it doesn't even stop to see whether the audience noticed it.

- Hack N Slash. A zelda-like game where the main character is capable of altering reality by tweaking the variables that make the game. Change the programming of enemies to turn them into friends, make your sword do infinite damage, etc. The game is build on the idea of breaking it through exploration, so much that it includes a "restore to build" option.

AaaaaAAaaaAAAAaAAAAA for the awesome. Jumping off buildings and avoiding obstacles.

Awesomenauts. Team based platformer and shooter.

The last federation. You try to manipulate politics from the outside. It also has turn based bullet hell combat.

Monster Loves You. A visual novel about growing up as a monster.

Nidhogg. 2d fencing game, with a lot of depth do it. The game is best played against friends.

Recettear. Buy and sell stuff as you run an item shop.

Unholy Heights. You run an apartment block as Satan.

Sid Meier's Pirates. The best pirate game that has been made. The gameplay is basically a series of minigames, but you get to do all the things you expect a pirate to do.

Uplink. A hacking game, that really makes me feel like a hacker.

Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines. The gameplay isn't great, but if you want a really well developed and interesting rpg set in the modern day aobut vampires, this is the best choice.

Shank, Bleed, Jamestown, and LUFTRAUSERS are all wonderful indie action titles, and One Finger Death Punch is one of the best titles released this year, indie or not.

EYE Divine Cybermancy is a strange, usually beautiful game, VVVVVV is perhaps the best retro-bait game out there, and Puzzle Agent is the best Telltale game/IP out there.

Also The Void is worth playing, if you can handle it.

Since I'm sure everyone's inevitably going to list FTL, Gone Home, The Stanley Parable, Papers Please, etc, I'll go with some I'm fairly certain no one will list. So here goes:

Terraria
- Some might call it a 2D Minecraft rip-off. But these people are idiots. Terraria is so much more than that. It has everything one might expect from a game of this sort, in terms of building, exploring, and crafting, but these things are just the tip of the iceberg. The breadth and scope of the game world are astounding. You'll find yourself starting out in a fairly basic world of mild wilderness, equipped with nothing more than a crappy little copper sword and a pickaxe. You'll barely be able to fight off the tiniest of slimes. By the end, you'll be flying around with wings, jetpacks, and hover-boards as you combat Lovecraftian monsters, gigantic robots, and legions of goblins, pirates, snowmen, vampires, swamp monsters, and werewolves with your arsenal of swords, magic flails, spell books, sniper rifles, rocket launchers, summoning staffs, Tron-inspired light-discs, and more. All the while attempting to keep the world in balance between the Corruption and the Hallowed.

And this isn't even touching on the incredibly wide range of building and crafting options.

Broforce
- It's a side-scroller, action-shooter with heavy influences from 80's and 90's era games of the same genre. The entire premise is that you, and friends if you want, assume the role of a random movie action hero from the last three decades and blast your way through the levels. Every level is completely destructable and a few feature some pretty fun boss fights. The game also includes several solo, co-op, and pvp modes as well as a built in level editor.

Torchlight 2
- This is what I wanted Diablo 3 and Path of Exile to be. It's everything Diablo 2 was but massively improved in many areas. The inclusion of the robust modding tools and Steam Workshop support make it even better.

Project Zomboid
- Despite it being a retro-looking top-down, isometric game, PZ is quite possibly one of the most complex and intricate zombie apocalypse survival games I've ever played. Not only do you have to concern yourself with carry weight limits, hunger/thirst, and sleep cycles, but you also have to contend with disease, emotional states, panic and paranoia, limited sight lines, etc. Sometimes you'll find yourself having to leave behind a spare bat so you can carry some pain meds for that wounded knee or a pack of cigarettes to alleviate your character of the unhealthy levels of stress. Other times you'll find yourself having to tear up your shirt for use as a makeshift rope ladder so you can escape the 2nd floor of the house you were just sleeping in. A house whose lower floor is completely inundated with the undead thanks to a passing chopper attracting them to this location. This in turn will leave you exposed to the cold and the rain that have swept in while you slept, which may in turn lead your character to contracting pneumonia.
If you like survival roguelikes, I highly recommend this one.

Super Amazing Wagon Adventure
- It's dumb. It's silly. It's campy. It's fast paced and addictive. It's a parody of Oregon Trail and 80's tropes. It's cheap to buy. What more do you need to know?

http://www.sparsevector.com/wagon-adventure/

Solar 2
- It's a game where you play as an asteroid and work your way up to being a universe-consuming blackhole. Honestly, it's hard to do this game justice by describing it. My suggestion is to just see for yourself.

It's not terribly deep, but it is addictive and great as a time sink or if you're in need of some quiet, relaxing, contemplation.

I have so many more I could recommend, but my post is getting a little long. If you're interested in more, OP, let me know and I'll post some others.

One word: Nihilumbra

If you love 2D platformers with fun mechanics, a beautiful atmosphere, a pretty good story, and some genuinely tense moments, get this game. I don't want to overhype it too much, but I love this game. It's one of my favorite indie games.

I also recommend the Squids series, but I'm not sure if those are on Steam or not. I know they're on PC, I just don't know about Steam. Those games are fantastic. The Escapist themselves described it as "A mix of Angry Birds and Final Fantasy Tactics." I don't know if that appeals to you or not, but even if it doesn't, I'd at least give it a look. It's a super fun physics based SRPG with a great cast of characters and a fantastic story if that's your thing. It's challenging and addictive with a LOT of content to go through.

The game you want is Freedom Planet.
Seconded!
Freedom Planet is also my favorite game of the year.

Cloudbuilt is also worth looking into.

Holy shit how could I forget about Terraria! I've clocked more hours in that game than any other tracked hours on my Steam account. I mean, I probably played Morrowind, Team Fortress 2 and Borderlands almost as much, if not more, but I don't have record of it.

There are a number of Curators whose "job" it is to do exactly this, including our dear, departed friend and former reviews editor, Mr. Jim Sterling. However, I can toss out a few recommendations of my own:

Shovel Knight. If you enjoy platforming, you should already own Shovel Knight; a glorious blend of NES classics such as Mega Man, Legend of Zelda, Super Mario Bros, Rygar, and ActRaiser, but with its own unique style. It hasn't had a sale yet, on any of its available platforms, but it's well worth the $15 USD asking price.

Awesomenauts. A 2D, platforming DOTA-style game with a crazy cast that features: a chimpanzee with a jetpack, a space cowboy with a holographic bull, a lizard with a lightsaber, a criminally insane psychic girl scout, and a sentient sword-wielding Scoop of ice cream. Everything that was awesome about 80's SatAM cartoons packed into a fun digital sport. Do yourself a favor and get the Soundtrack too. You won't regret it.

Dust: an Elysian Tale. Action-brawling-platforming goodness at its finest. Wonderful storytelling, if sometimes questionable voice-acting, and spot-on controls and mechanics. Even more impressive when you find out it was made by one guy (and some voice actors).

Magicite. Basically Terraria as a roguelike; concentrated and more action-oriented rather than exploration-focused. Much more stable (and vastly more fun) multiplayer.

Scribblenauts Unlimited. Cutesy and hardly challenging if you have an average college vocabulary (and/or Google), but freedom and creativity surpassed only by completely blank-slate games such as Minecraft. Not exactly "indie", I suppose, but on Daily Deal today.

Just about anything published by Devolver Digital. With a heart and soul of indie games, Devolver only publishes the most bonkers and awesome of games. Titles published by them include: LUFTROUSERS, Broforce, Hatoful Boyfriend (yes, a dating sim can be awesomely bonkers too), Hotline Miami, Heavy Bullets, Serious Sam, and Shadow Warrior (2013, also credited for the original and Duke Nukem 3D).

Anything by Zeboyd Games: Cthulu Saves the World, Breath of Death VII, and [Penny Arcade's] On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness 3 and 4. If you like classic RPG's, but feel they were a little too slow and too sane, Project Zomboid's proprietary mechanics and wacky storytelling rarely disappoint, though they can be frustrating at times if you're too used to turn-based gameplay.

Any of the recent Paradox Interactive entries, specifically: Magicka, Teleglitch, and Knights of Pen and Paper +1.
