Call it weird, but I love the feeling of being scared out my mind by videogames. It's a type of psychological thrill ride, because you can see clearly what's happening and can even control the action to a degree. However, I've found that I have an unusually high tolerance for horror. Moments in games that have scared others (such as Ravenholm in Half Life 2) cease to cause any degree of anxiety within me. The only game I've played recently that has managed to scare me was made in Flash! (It's called Ambridge Mansion. Look on Newgrounds.)

Anyway, my point is that I want to find a truly frightening and fun game. There are some limitations though, unfortunately:

I have a Gamecube, PS2, Wii, DS, and a PSP. I'm not buying a new console for a single game.

My computer only has an ATI Radeon X1200 graphics card and a 1.8 Ghz processor.

I realize this eliminates a few opportunities, but if anyone knows of any good horror games within these specifications I would love to know what they are.

Someone should make a romantic survival horror comedy game. Same idea as 'Shaun of the Dead'. Honestly, what the genre needs is some serious satirization.

Ahh, one game that comes to mind is Silent Hill 3.
I've never played Silent Hill before, and admittedly the only thing I know about it is the second game has a rapist with a giant metal triangle on his head. Guess it's worth looking into though.

I agree that a Shaun of the Dead-style video game (preferably not a game based on that actual film, just something in the spirit) would be a great idea.

I also recommend the Silent Hill series. Avoid Resident Evil, the play control's even worse than SH and it doesn't even have an interesting story to compensate.

I actually liked Silent Hill 2 a lot better than three, but a question I'd like to ask before making any recommendations is this:

Do you like the "things jump out and go BOO" horror style (see just about any slasher movie), or do you prefer the not really "shocking" but more a general feeling of creepy type of horror?

The revelation near the end of Silent Hill 2 wasn't scary by any stretch, but it really made me feel something. If you're more for the jump out and say BOO type of horror, there's games like Doom 3 (icky) and FEAR. Although I guess you could make a case for FEAR having more psychological and surprise horror, but the psych parts I usually just thought were neat, as opposed to creepy.

Agreed with the Silent Hills. SH2 is better, although SH3 is my fav.

Project Zero/ Fatal Frame series, I'm not sure which is scariest but the second game has been given the most appreciation.

Not scary at all but I'll mention it because it's such a fantastic game, Sanitarium. Creepy at max. Also applies to Still Life and its [buggy] previous game Post Mortem.

I'm somewhere between psychological and shocking. It doesn't necessarily need to be bloody, just pulse-pounding with possibly an aspect of having to make split-second decisions.

scariest game in recent memory is penumbra overture, its an adventure game, combat sucks but thankfully it barely plays a minor role in the game, quite good and creepy. pc game but i do think you meet the requirements

OS: Windows 2000/XP
Processor: 1Ghz
Memory: 256MB
Disc Space: 300MB free(for demo)
Video Card: Radeon 8500/GeForce 3

also theres the tech demo that spawned the 2 games (overture and black plague)
http://frictionalgames.com/penumbra/

demo for overture
http://www.penumbra-overture.com/demo.php

and the demo for black plague (comes out tuesday)
http://www.penumbrablackplague.com/site/demo.php

i know there are some creepier games but thats the only one i can think of, my memory isnt the best in the world.

Wow, there's even a Linux port for it. That may be better for me, since Vista's system processes tend to dominate the computer when I try playing most games.
