Reccommend me some PROG!

Prog is such a wide label it hardly has meaning. Are you looking for modern progressive or classic progressive? Are you looking for something metal-ish or something closer to post-rock?

In any case, here are bunch of bands that someone, once, has labeled progressive that haven't been mentioned yet:

Yes, Porcupine Tree (anything their lead singer, Steven Wilson, touches is gold, honestly. You may also want to check out his amazing solo album), Godspeed you Black Emperor, 65daysofstatic, El Ten Eleven, Tortoise.

If you want some really early stuff, check out The Moody Blues "On The Threshold Of A Dream". In fact, I think a couple of their albums could be considered an ancestor to progressive music.

Also, The Alan Parsons Project is probably half progressive (pretty much their whole discography are concept albums) and half classic rock, but the progressive moments can be seen rather clearly in a few songs.

Also, Muse. But I'd check their later works (Black Holes and Revelations, The Uprising). I'm not sure about the earlier ones.

Mastodon's Crack The Skye album is very prog, heavy as satan's balls too. To be honest I prefer the otehr albums, but that's mainly because they're not as proggy.

Here's a few less known prog bands:

Supreme Majesty - Kind of Prog-Power Metal. They have a very 1980's sound, even though they're modern.

Empty Tremor - Awesome Prog Metal band from Italy.

Empyria - Another Prog Metal band, this one has a vocalist who sounds a lot like ozzy.

Also, I'm not trying to advertise, but www.nightmarerecords.com is a label/distributor who specializes in Progressive Metal bands. It's like.... Prog heaven.

Very much so. One of my favourite bands ever. Also try Mastodon's album Crack The Skye, and Opeth. Also there's a fella named Paul Cusick who put out a pretty amazing solo album prog album called Focal Point.

I know Mastodon has been mentioned a couple of times, but their older stuff is quite prog rock too, especially the Remission album.

Spoiler: This ones an instrumental, theres other tracks around if that's not your thing.

I'll throw in my suggestions:

Tool - Can't go wrong with any of their albums. "Ænima", "Lateralus", and "10,000 Days" are good places to start.

Rishloo - Their vocalist sounds similar to Maynard James Keenan (the lead singer of Tool), but they're still pretty unique, and they've got three good albums behind them. Check out "Scissorlips", and "River of Glass", both of them from the "Feathergun" album.

Isis - I haven't listened to much of Isis, but they seem to sound like Tool, but with screaming. "20 Minutes / 40 Years" is a good song to start off with.

Amorphis - Their early stuff is Death Metal (still good stuff), but everything from "Elegy" (1996) onwards is Progressive Metal, and they're some good material in there. Listen to "Silver Bride".

James LaBrie - Lead singer of Dream Theater, but he's got some pretty good solo material. He's got two albums under his own name, and two earlier solo albums under the name "MullMuzzler". He put out his latest solo album, "Static Impulse", last year, and there's some amazing tracks on there. It's definitely better than Dream Theater's last album, "Black Clouds and Silver Linings".

Children of Nova - They've only got a six-track EP out at the moment, called "The Complexity of Light", but it's a pretty amazing release. The first two tracks, "The Complexity of Light", and "Arcadeon", really showcase each member's talents, especially the lead singer, who can hit very high notes with almost no effort!


Other suggestions, but I don't know too much about them: Mastodon, Porcupine Tree, Jethro Tull, Pink Floyd.

I think Sonata Arctica's last 2 albums probably qualify as prog, as do Stratovarius in Elements and Elements Part II. On the whole, it sounds like you're already listening to some pretty awesome music, but might I suggest Porcupine Tree? Particularly (in my opinion)Stupid Dream and In Absentia.

Tool are also pretty good, especially in 10,000 days.

Particularly their new album Sound Awake, Themata was more rock/metal. Best to describe their sound as Tool but unique and far less depressing. So for Prog's sake I shall give you their second longest ,and arguably best, Change.

EDITeadman instead (Stupid copyright laws), longish but it gives best idea of vocals and atmosphere.

I'll go from light to heavy, starting from prog rock and trying to avoid what others already recommended:

A classic prog rock piece is Gentle Giant - The Advent of Panurge. I was unable to find an appropriate video for this song though

Also, give Martigan - Red & Green a listen. Again no video


This is a nice song featuring lots of brass instruments:

Can't believe Floyd was mentioned but not Zeppelin. Soundgarden, Dave Matthews Band and Smashing Pumpkins have also dabbled quite a bit in progressive concepts.

Entropia by Pain of Salvation is also an incredible album.


Selling England by the Pound by Genesis is also a MUST have album for any Prog fan.

How about: Fates Warning, Miosis, Prisma, Klone (all three are like Tool, but good in their own right), Communic, Ark, Sieges Even, Sun Caged, Mind's Eye, Jethro Tull, Canvas Solaris, Monkey3, Colour Haze. The last three are more instrumental based bands, with Colour Haze having some vocals on some songs, but over all they are just as good.

I've heard this called Post-rock as well, but both Prog and Post definitions seem vague enough to fit in both.
