AYREON

AND

AVANTASIA

But seriously, my man, these two 'bands' are the brainchildren of demons and have guest appearances from every man and his mother, from Jon Oliva to Devin Townsend. It's packed to the rafters with some of the most powerful musical moments you will ever experience, high points include the incredible 'Loser' from Ayreon's 'The Human Equation' (Listen to it in context, it's a good yarn) and anything from the third act of one of Avantasia's 'Wicked Trilogy' albums.

If you never hear another song in your life, make the last one by these gents.

In the metal-ish sector I can name some.

Animals as Leaders - It's a "new" prog metal band with only one album, both guitarists are amazing, specially Tosin Abasi, and the drum player is a beast too, the basist is made with a DAW by Abasi, trully brilliant band, it could be somewhat too progressive for starters. Mind blowing. I recommend this band to everyone here.

Blotted Science - Simmilar to Animals as Leaders but heavier and a bit more "mathematical", definately less friendly than AaL.

Gojira - French "Whale Metal" band, they are quite heavy, and by quite I mean Meshuggah-like heavy or even more, at some times. I don't know if they are prog anything in the general rock scene but for this subgenre they are like an evolution from the original Thrash Metal [Metallica > Sepultura > I got lost here > Gojira/Meshuggah] They just sound sooo good anyways. Pay attention to the drummer (Mario Dupantier), a total obliterator.

Joe Satriani

In the Pop/Rock division I know less but these three are good.

Downliners Sekt - I don't know how's called what they do, but it's great.

65 Days of Static - Already mentioned

Dna - Super crazy "No wave" band, will give you headaches.

Veil of Maya, Periphery, TesseracT, Meshuggah, Extol, The Human Abstract, Haunted Shores, Ever Forthright, Animals as Leaders, Protest the Hero, The Fall of Troy, Circa Survive (if you can stand every song sounding similar) are all really good.

And honestly, you can't go wrong with Yes.

I'll answer the same thing I always answer: Ruins.

Extremely frenetic and precise, and pretty weird and humorous. It gets a bit of a Magma-ish vibe since all the lyrics are gibberish.
Yes, that is a duo.

Also, with the same drummer, Koenjihyakkei. Kind of like Ruins but with more instruments and conventional rhythms.
