I'm looking for recent, good RPGs.

What I'm not looking for are:
i) MMOs. Just no.
ii) FPSs. Deus Ex was brilliant. It was also an FPS. The same is true of Bioshock, and pretty much any other first-person "RPG" you care to name.
iii) Button-mashing RPGs. Hated Diablo II.
iv) Oblivion/Elder Scrolls/whatever. I don't know why, but I just don't like this.

What I've played:
i) NWN1/2. All content. Including Mysteries of Westgate. NWN2: MotB was the best, but the whole NWN2 series was awesome. NWN1 sucked.
ii) Baldur's Gate I/II/ToB.
iii) Planescape: Torment.
iv) Both KotORs.
v) Fallout 1/2/3.
vi) Mass Effect.
EDIT: vii) Also Icewind Dale I/II/HoW, but I never really got into these properly, probably due to lack of character development/plot/annoying idling models where the characters look around blankly even in combat.

The above were all awesome. I'm not picky, really, in terms of setting. Futuristic/fantasy are both good. Just something with a good plot, good characters, and RPGy.

Any suggestions?

Demons Souls on PS3, you have to import it but it is in English and its the nuts

So hardcore it hurts though

Or maybe Tales of Versperia that out soon isnt it on 360?

You played Mass Effect and you don't like fantasy RPG's like Oblivion.

How about Fable, I recommend Fable 1.

Maybe I should specify that the only platform I own is a PC. No consoles.

Vrex360: I'm not sure exactly what it is about Oblivion; I think it's the setting, more than anything, but I just don't like it.

Tales of Vesperia or Any Tales game really, fun Action JRPGS with great charcters and battles. Persona 3 isn't bad either as a school sim/dungeon crawler,It's fairly mature and has a great story so far. I acctualy care about the charcters because they are realistic( to a degree).

Wow, you have similar tastes in PC RPGs as I do (though I enjoyed Morrowind for a little while, but I did eventually get bored). And.... unfortunately, as far as I know, you've done all the good ones. I can't think of anything recent or new that would be similar. (Believe me, I am following this thread to see what else is recommended.)

Older stuff... Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magic Obscura is decent, if you don't mind lots of bugs (I never saw the end of the game because of one) and the occasional sprinkling of creepy misogyny. I've heard Temple of Elemental Evil is good IF you download the fan made patch so the game actually works and is more interesting. I tried the game vanilla and thought it was terribly bland, however. If you want to really, really, really old school and you like D&D based stuff, try some of the old Gold Box games (they'll be more hacky slashy than RP oriented, but they do have some good story to them, and you can see how they are the direct predecessors of games like Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale).

Since you have NWN2, I'd recommend downloading some user-made modules from the NWNVault. There's some good stuff out there, and since you already have the software, you may as well make the most of it. Try the Purgatorio demo.

If you have the old NWN still installed on your computer, look for a module called "Darkness over Daggerford" (it was supposed to have been an official premium module, but Atari backed out, so the Devs--the same people who did Mysteries of Westgate for NWN2--just finished it and released it for free on the NWNVault)

Dragon Age will be coming out in October.

If you DO ever decide to go the console route, the creative minds behind the first 2 Fallouts, Torment, KotOR II, and NWN2 are making a spy-themed RPG for the PS3 called Alpha Protocol. I may well be getting a PS3 at some point for that alone.

Some further notes: Sorry E_nchanted, but I don't have any of those platforms. I meant to mention that in my OP, but forgot. My apologies.

I hated Diablo because my finger began to hurt, because I kept dying because I wasn't doing it right, and because it was just.. I dunno.. Uninteresting.

I have little interest in JRPGs, because I don't like grind, random battles are my bane, and they just aren't something that interest me.

As for the gold box games: I've tried a couple of them via the cunning medium of NWN2 modules, but they were too hacky-slashy for me, sadly. :-(

DeathQuaker: I'll have a look at Arcanum and Temple of Elemental. I'm looking forward to Dragon Age, (and have been following it since it was announced way back in, what was it now, 2003? 2004?).. Ah yes, I haven't played Darkness Over Daggerford.. Currently away from my NWN1 cds, but it shouldn't be too hard to reinstall, and I'll give that a try.

The fact you found that game hard is ASTOUNDING. It takes like 4 nights (if you have no life whatsoever) to finish. Well, if you don't like toilet breaks and eating it does.

The fact your finger was hurting from it is ALSO ASTOUNDING. because you can't be a gamer if your finger hurts from clicking that fast, hell your finger barely even moves when you click the mouse, you're likely to do more damage TYPING. Not only that but if you go a necromancer you just have to stand in one spot while your minions carve up the place.

i) I have a life. I kept getting killed because I hadn't worked out which combinations were good, and I wasn't enjoying it, so I gave up.

ii) Well, that's true, but if for several hours, all your finger is doing is moving up and down constantly, it hurts. More accurately, it was hurting my tendons, so I thought giving it up was a good idea.

iii) I wasn't a necromancer.

At any rate, i like my games a bit more cerebral.

1) Combinations? Spam whatever works.

2) Yeah but... I've played this game for several hours and I never really had to click that often in a fight.

3) I can't respond to that xD except that maybe you can pretty much play any class and spam one spell or attack over and over to win fights.

If all you want is good plot and good characters then you might want to try looking past the PC RPG genre. Otherwise maybe try games like Wizardry 8, Jagged Alliance 2, Vampire: Bloodlines and Temple of Elemental Evil.

There's a German RPG called Drakensang which might be to your liking. It's a group based fantasy RPG based on the P&P The Dark Eye.

Drakensang, hey? Intriguing. I take it that it's available in English translation?

More Fun to Compute: That's true, but I like the RPG elements as well.. Vampire was always something I meant to try out.. Is that the second one?

How is The Witcher not mentioned? It's using a modified NWN engine, has some parallels with Torment and a bunch of other things going for it. Another game called Drakensang: Dark Eye is a fairly standard swords and sorcerers type deal, which is also a decent RPG romp.

Bioware has also released Jade Empire, which you might want to check out. The battles are more like Mass Effect than KotOR but there's still a Bioware RPG down there.

There's also Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines if you're interested, though be prepared to patch it loads before actually playing. Still a worthwhile game, I think.

Isn't Vampire really REALLY old? Like 5+ years? Not that I'm complaining.

I'm unsure about the Witcher. I've heard all sorts of random things about it, and I'm just not sure about it.

I'm intrigued about Drakensang. I'm looking in to it and it looks promising, but perhaps you can tell me: Is it anything like Dungeon Siege? Because that game I also hated..
