I always enjoyed boardgames but the only other person that really did was my mum and playing monopoly and cluedo (played with sets that belonged to my dad when he was a kid) with 2 people doesn't really work.

Between seeing Chutes and Ladders as soon as I came to the article, and then your comment about a punch in the mouth, you just astronomically improved my mood. Thanks Andy.
And yes, a night a week or at least once a month with a board game amongst family or friends would be a good thing. There are many things a board game can still offer that a videogame misses. Even with headsets and multiplayer.

hypothetical fact said:
Kids need to skip snakes and ladders, that game is fun for five minutes until every kid figures out that the dice decides everything.
Like most of the popular videogames today?

Hit me up on backgammon and I will kick your ass people.

My main problem with many board games is that many of them the outcomes are based purely on chance. Take LIFE for example, it takes absolutely no skill to play, and everything is decided by chance. Chess I find is a very "pure" game, because there is no chance involved, when you screw up, it is your own fault. Unlike games like Risk where entire outcomes of wars are decided with a roll of the dice.
I don't think D&D and other roleplaying games are as bad about this, since they have enough modifiers for the original roll that it more accurately simulates real-world chance.

I have been saying for a while now that video games moving away from turn based play and using a philosophy that says that the player should never lose or be too challenged is bad for the medium. Patience, planning and the ability to face up to challenges are not seen as bad things by most people. They are things that people aspire to and traits they want to develop in their children.

Video games do have many advantages over board games but when trying to appear like other entertainment media they give themselves an image problem.

I just got Last Night on Earth: The Zombie Game for x-mas. Not because it was cheap(it was 50$!), but because its the best zombie board game out there.

Risk is the original RTS. I've played I think 3 versions of it, Original, LOTR, and Star Wars and have enjoyed them all. Although I think my favorite version of it was LOTR since there were strategic famous locations on the world that people could actually fight over and hold to get bonuses instead of just every chunk of land being interexchangable in the original Risk.

I have Axis and Allies the board game, but I never played anyone but myself :(
Which is a shame as its a massive game, but saying "Hey want to crack out a board game, spend 20 mins setting it up, another 30 mins teaching you the rules then about 3 hours actually playing it?" never illicts a good response.

I like this.
I'm an avid gamer of both board and computer games, and there's definitly a greater sense of a social activity when board gaming. Here at home we like to sit down to a good game of settlers now-and-then. We've also had a couple of mildly disasterous attempts at Agricola (Excellent game, just takes forever to set up and play when you're learning it) and Pandemic (nice little co-op game, we just couldn't quite grasp the mechanics first time round). With my friends we've found a few drinks makes a game of ZOMBIES!!! extra fun, and a bit of Arkham Horror is a must after reading any Lovecraft.

I love board games, especially the more 'modern' ones from Europe that are fun, challenging, and don't just depend on dice rolls. For example, (as previously mentioned), Settlers of Cataan and Carcassonne. A good old-fashioned round of Monopoly is always fun, too!
