Recettear was digital hemp & a bag of cheese supreme doritos at the same time. Addictive, mind-numbing pleasure that if it were full screened rather than windowed I would possibly lose track of days rather than hours.
You know, there is a separate config app that lets you change the resolution it runs at and make it full screen and set different key bindings and all that. Yes, now you're doomed.
I don't know that it's one of the best games I've played in the past year, but it's definitely one of the best ideas for a game I've run into for a while (it's one of the first things in a while that I decided I
needed to buy immediately after finishing the demo...and that was without even leaving town once), and there's a lot to like about it. I haven't finished the main story yet, because I get a little tired going through the same routine day after day sometimes. It seems pretty trivial to meet any requirements I've run into so far, once I figured out how pricing works/how to get people to carry more money with them, and my schedule I've set for myself in-game is a bit repetitive, even if it's successful.
That said, I still end up doing it for hours at a time anyway whenever I fire up the game, because the writing is so silly and makes a lot of the characters very likable, the style and tone of the game is a nice change of pace from all the dark/mature/adult/manly stuff out there, and there's just something satisfying about convincing everyone who walks through the door that it really is in their best interest to give you all their money. Capitalism, ho!
If this next game is anything like it in style/quality/quirkiness, I'm sure they'll end up with more of my money at some point. I do kind of wish I'd paid more for Recettear to support them, though. I bought the bundle it was in only for it, because it was the only game in it I wanted that I didn't already own, and after all the money's divided up, they probably got something like a nickel. Maybe a dime if they're lucky.
