This is my First Topic so be gentle.

While replying to a topic, this idea came into my head:
Have you ever been to a City/place in real life and recognised it from a previous gaming experience.
eg. recognising London streets from the Getaway.

I'm not really interested if you had a knowledge of the city before you played the game it was depicted in, but all comments are welcome.
What I'm really interested in is, is it possible to get a knowledge of an area before you go there by simple playing video games... Like a sort of Virtual Tourism?*

*I know there are those PSP games 'Passport to...' but I mean proper Sandbox games.

I think in The Getaway they made up some of the locations but added in the obviously well known ones. PGR3 had a fairly good representation of a part of London but was too fast paced to really get to 'know' any of them.

And I believe that some places, museums etc, do or at least did have virtual tours online where you could essentially walk around and see exhibits. There was also someone who planned to make virtual versions of towns and cities in England but I don't think it took off, he visited my school and let people walk around our town though. But back then the graphics weren't all that amazing.

In theory if you had a good enough virtual environment it's possible that you could go to the actual place and know your way around to some degree.

Um, I don't think so...At least, nothing springs to mind immeadietly. Washington DC doesn't look like it's nuclear wasteland counterpart...

Hang on, Manhatten in Spider Man 2 is pretty much exactly the same as the real Mahatten, so I think you could get away with that...maybe...

Like Age of Empires II.
I learned a bunch of shit from that game that came in handy later.
All except from the Scottish/Tutorial Campaign...which is very, very historicaly wrong. But still fun none the less

But I've definitely learned a lot about varying subjects from videogames, only to have them come up in conversation/class.

Like Age of Empires II.

Yeah, same with Age of Empires III.
You learn, that, secretly, a magical crusade fought both the Scottish knights, and the American railroad builders in search of a magical artifact near the old Mayan kingdoms.

Yeah, I recognized places from S.T.A.L.K.E.R in Pripyat :)

Real life needs bloodsuckers however.

I've learnt things from games, but recognised places from them? Never.

According to my parents, Resistance 1 made a very good reconstruction of Manchester Cathedral though.
