Recomend me a Space Combat game

So lately I have been playing Battle Star Galatica online and really liking it. However I really want to play a "pure" space combat game. I have no experience in the genre so I wouldn't know the good ones. So please post a recommendation and description of a space combat game below.
Note- I own a Wii,360, and use steam for my comp. Please recommend a cheaper one if possible please.

As in you control your own ship? I liked Evochron mercenary, but you must be able to put up with the game throwing you out in a huge world without any sense of purpose beyond "don´t die".

I quite like Wing Commander, though ancient graphics and bad controls seem to mean I'm the only one that does.

Never played a space combat game in my life, but an avid space fan friend of mine went crazy when he realised freespace 2 was in the GOG christmas sale. If there was anything I recommend it would be freespace 2.

SOL: Exodus surely? New on Steam, a tenner, apparently quite short but brings back the spirit of the epic missions in older stuff like X Wing. I've not got it yet but do fancy it.

X-Wing Alliance was pretty fun, but it gets a bit hard and I was never able to finish it.

The X series (Let's just say X3) for an Elite vibe.
Independence War 2 for capital ship combat.

This. There's also tons of free mods that you can get. Mods range from graphical improvements, gameplay changes, and full blown campaigns.
