Damn I was gonna recommend Killing Joke! Haha.

OT: I haven't read it but I've heard Batman RIP is a must read. Batman: Hush is pretty good as well, plus there's the new 52 stuff.

I also recommend Hush. It's a very good mystery and a good start for newcomers. The Long Halloween is also really good, a classic noir Batman. My all time favorite, however, is Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth. That one is truly amazing. Read it during the night for the full effect - it will mess with your head. The artwork is the perfect mix of terrifying and awesome.

The early Frank Millar stuff, Year One and The Dark Knight Returns is a must.

Also Dick Greyson taking up the cowl has made for some of the best Batman comics.Morrison's Batman & Robin is the definitive dynamic duo story, and The Black Mirror is apsolutely amazing too.

First Year I hear is a good read. Batman, Batman & Robin and most of the other new 52 Batman are good. Stay away from Catwoman and The Dark Knight. Those are two of the weaker ones. Batman Inc. is good and its seqial/ one-shot/ relaunch Batman: The Leviathan Strikes is also good. Also the Batman Inc. is getting a relaunch next month.

I can vouch for The Long Halloween. Nolan drew from it pretty heavily in The Dark Knight, and it's good enough to stand on its own.

These are both awesome comics and great starting places especially year one being Batman's origin along with Catwoman and Commissioner Gordan anddddddd it being one of the best batman books avalible on most peoples lists.

The Dark Knight Returns is important. It gets a lot of backlash these days because Frank Miller has gone batshit insane. But it is really good. Narratively and artistically it was innovating and it's a great concept "what happens when Batman gets old?", which churns out a pretty good story. Year One is also a decent story but I feel a bit over rated.

Any of Grant Morrison's run is good. It's pretty decisive amongst some fans, but there's a lot of homage to golden and silver age batman, while keeping a gritty modern tone. Batman-Batman & Robin-Batman INC are all pretty good.

Arkham Assylums : A serious house on a serious earth by Grant Morrison is pretty good too.

For me I think Grant Morrison's run has been hit and miss. The ideas have always been great or at least interesting but the excusion can be off at times.

Batman & Robin is a must, but RIP was nothing but a complete mess to me. Batman Inc has had it's ups and downs, though it does have a couple of the best issues of the entire run like the Man of Bats story (which is "what would Batman be like in third world conditions?") and Levitatian Strikes which is trippy as fuck.
