MMOs by standard design are meant to be grindey timesinks that don't really encourage skill.
The only exception I've ever seen to this rule is Puzzle Pirates, but maybe that's because it's an MMOPuzzler, instead of an MMORPG.

You can play it free if you like, but that actually requires more of a time investment as everything costs twice as much on the free severs, and you need to purchase special licenses every month in order to do things like Captain your ships and whatnot.

Depends on what you want. Do you want PvP? PvE? Roleplayability? Dungeon stompyness? These things determine the games that would appeal to you.

You're also pretty much forced to play a lawful alignment. I tried playing as chaotic evil and people cried like a ***** every time I wanted to hold a town for ransom. The server Antarctica doesn't have many rules but then again it has almost no people there either.Naqel said:

Yeah, I'd recommend LOTRO if you've read the books, or if you like fantasy in general, or if you want a good community to play with. Really good MMO (its also free, so there's that) with some of the best PvE in existence. The PvP really sucks though if you're not on one of the select servers that do it well.
Rift has impressed me thus far. The public grouping system for the titular events is great, and the community seems to be pretty decent. I'm loath to compare it to the elephant in the room, but it's standing up pretty well against WoW in vanilla, I'd love to see where it goes after a major content expansion. My only gripe would be the relative difficulty of grouping for lower level dungeons. WoW's cross-shard system does make for much easier dungeon crawling. Not only that but being in a LFG queue prevents you from joining a public raid, a bit of a pain when a zonewide invasion drops out of nowhere.
