There's no way you can think they've evolved more. They're all pretty much the same. Same story telling, same character design, same antagonistic forces, same symbolism same gameplay mechanics. It was fine when they had to sacrifice gameplay for size and scale. They don't need to do that now. JRPG's need to look at what Demon's souls did. If they take their games in that direction they might actually become fun.
The fuck do you mean by turntable, turn based combat? I haven't played a J"RPG" with actual turn based combat since FFX. I haven't played anything that resembles an actual RPG since Planescape: Torment either. Turn based is absolutely fine with me since it's the most realistic way of doing combat, pull out all the time spent scrolling through menus and it looks like an actual fight. Unlike say Mass Effect which happens in real time so if you want to use an ability you have to hold down a button then rotate through the menu to find what you want while everything else is still happening around you so something that should only take a second of real time to do takes much longer.
Yes turntable. They are all turntable. Most realistic way? Are you smoking crack? You choose from a drop down menu which attack to use then wait a turn for the oponant to do the same..... Real time is the only thing that comes close to realistic. And no, not like Mass Effect. Everything should be done in realtime. Even choosing spells/abilities.
I've used this example a lot but see demon's souls. If you think turntable is realistic try changing spells whilst attempting to fend off a groupe of undead soldiers trying to rip your innards out. Plus they don't wait 10 minutes for you to choose the most appropriate attack. that's realistic.
Let's say hypothetically your a Battle Mage, fighting that group of undead soldiers. You've cast a few Lesser Orb of Fire spells (this would be your selected spell in the game) but now that they've become a bit more grouped you decide Stone Rain would be a better spell in reality you wouldn't run around for 15 seconds so you could scroll through menus to change spells you'd cast your different spell as soon as you wanted.
Since you're no fan of turn based I'll retort with a real time game of my own. Planescape: Torment was real time but when you wanted to cast a spell you'd right click and the quick menu would pop up and (here's the key point) the game would pause allowing you to select your spell with no game time being lost from rotating the spell wheel, because like I stated before in reality you don't have to scroll through menus to cast a spell/drink a potion there is very little time between deciding to perform an action and actually doing it.
In a game like the first fable or Demon's souls you simply tap the button that has been configured to change the castable spell untill the one you want pops up. It takes no real momentum from the game as you can still be attacking with your sword or arrows as you change your caster. It's equivalent to changing a thought really. No drop down menu's. Now flow breaking pauses until you choose your best spell. It's all about how you multitask.
But to be fair on a computer. The console that RPG's are really meant to be played on, you would simply hotkey different spells to different keys. So then it's simply down to your memory.
The game I'm playing at the minute 'The Void' makes you physically draw a glyph to activate a certain spell. That was also the way magic worked on an old game my friend played. I can't remember it's name, Archaphel or something. How much more authentic do you want it? All way more immersive, realistic and overall better thana drop down menu that pauses the game.
