Thread title says it all. Fire away.

...

Okay, okay, I should probably write a bit more then that.

See, in recent months I've been looking for a game to satisfy my horror fix. I've tried the F.E.A.R. games, Dead Space, AvP, Metro 2033 and even Alan Wake. While a couple of these, Metro 2033 in particular, were good games, they all failed rather miserably in the horror department. That is to say, they just weren't scary.

The last games I remember that managed to get to me were the Penumbra titles and that was at least a year ago. So until
they get around to releasing Amnesia I'm stuck.

So, once again, fire away.

P.S. If you have a recommendation please provide a bit more detail then just the title. Thanks

Penumbra, very atmospheric.

Also a part of the problem I see here is all your "horror" games are fps's, games lose a certain amount of scare factor when you can kill the thing scaring you.

Penumbra hands down, the only horror game I have played that truly scared me.

Penumbra

It's a first-person puzzler, but its monter moments are really scary. Atmospheric, puzzling and scary.

Vampire the Masquerade

Honestly it's buggy and its gameplay is boring, but its hotel level is the most atmospheric and scariest level of any game I've played.

Call of Cthulu

It's a lot like Penumbra, but more action.

Uh... guys... I know you mean well and I really hate to sound ungrateful but... umm, did any of you even read the post? Because I mentioned right there that I've played Penumbra. And that it was good.

I love it when people only read the title.

Anyway, Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth is a pretty good horror game (if you're willing to put up with some bugs and rushed design). Or if you have the original Half-Life, Afraid of Monsters is a good, free mod for it that'll scare the crap out of you.

Edit: Dammit, ninja'd by the OP.

Whatever, just wash your hands.
cryostasis and the white chamber,
cryostasis is an fps without much of the s so far, I just started it, it takes place in a russian ice breaker ship and they get the atmosphere down really well

white chamber is free just google it, its a point and click adventure game but it does horror pretty well too

If you've got Half-Life 2, get the mod Korsakovia. It's quite experimental and not for everyone, but I've never had a game fuck me up so bad as Korsakovia. It is the scariest thing I have ever played.

What the heck are you doing sittin' around asking for a new horror game, go play Penumbra again.

And again and again and again and ag- you get the point, and yes I read the entire post but seriously, play Penumbra again.

Edit: In fact, this makes me wan't to play Penumbra again.

That's what I was about to say. Some of the jumping puzzle crap is downright dismal (and this is coming from someone who actually liked Xen in HL1), but if you can get over that, it has the best atmosphere of anything I've ever played, period.

Why haven't you played Condemned yet? Seriously, do you want a horror game or not? That's all you'll need to keep you up at night for months! It's 20% serial killer mystery, 20% gritty urban action game, and 60% balls-out headfuckery!
Also, if you've got HL2, look up a little mod called "The Hidden". Brix will be shat.

I've been looking for this one for ages, can't find it anywhere.

I could make a recommendation, but everyone who's ever read one of my posts knows what it would be, and I already sound enough like a broken record on the subject of a certain space-based survival horror game.

Try "Clive Barker's Undying" and "Nosferatu".
Old games but very scary. This 2 games and of cours the 2 "Penumbra" games scared the crap out of me.
