Recommend a good 'pet' style game?

I've been feeling a hankering for a good 'Gotta-Catch-Em-All-But-Please-God-No-More-Pokemon' gaming experience. I've been revisiting Final Fantasy Tactics Advance and never realized how closely this game resembled that kind of 'pet' gameplay. You catch or 'recruit' new team members, equip them so they can learn new abilities, and level them up to create a perfect team of pets or 'clan members'. For some reason this has me craving a similar experience, and all I can think of is Pokemon. I do not want to play another Pokemon game.

But I do want to play a good 'pet' game. Any suggestions?

SPECTROBES!
Its an Excellent Pet Battle Game Series.
Its a little similar to Pokemon but the Spectrobes, Gameplay, and Abilitys are all unique.
And the Stories for the games are awesome.

1 was a good game, it was a little confusing though.
Spectrobes:Beyond the Portals is much better and is on the DS.
Spectrobes:Origins is probably my favorite out of the 3, and its on the Wii.

All of them have unique and cool looking Spectrobes to Train, Evolve, and Fight with.
I highly recommend you give the series a go.

I did a bit of research and that does look like exactly the kind of thing I'd like to play. I plan on getting a DS in the next few weeks so I'll definitely pick up Beyond The Portals as one of my first titles. Thanks for the recommendation!

Id also get the guide if you can find it.
Not only will having a map and a Encyclopedia come in very handy, it comes with some rare Download Cards.
Later on in the game you will get the option to use any Download cards you have to get rare items and unlock different things.
